Early Adoption Program

Second Round Early Adoption Program

We greatly appreciate the feedback, comments and encouragement from the first 50 early adoption customers. The number of "YES" votes from the first round has exceeded our expectation, and therefore we have decided to expand the Early Adoption Program to a second round of 300 customers.

OPPO is a customer-oriented company. The primary goal of the Early Adoption Program is to be sure that the BDP-83 meets our customers' expectations. For the second round, we will randomly select 300 names from those who signed up for the Blu-ray Interest List, and send invitations to order on Monday, March 16th.

These combined 350 customers from the first & second rounds of the Early Adoption Program will help us in deciding when to release the BDP-83 to the public. If a supermajority (at least 70%) votes "Yes" because they feel that the player is ready, we will release it to the general public. Customers who signed up on the OPPO BDP-83 interest list early will be given a higher priority to purchase a unit.

I've used this player to play Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, DVD-Audios, and Super Audio CDs and everything works extremely well with the latest (05/04/09) firmware. DVD deinterlacing and upscaling are superb. Blu-ray load times are very fast and they look and sound wonderful. Overall I am very pleased with the BDP-83.

This player has an impressive feature set that delivers what it promises. I have tested several SACD and DVD-Audio, Blu-ray 7.1 DTS-MA (Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian), DTS CD, SD DVD (Star Wars Episode 1 DD 5.1EX) working with a Denon 2809 HDMI 1.3 receiver and Samsung 4665 LCD HDTV. I have tested the SACD in both bitstream and PCM modes. In PCM mode the Denon lights its 24-bit icon, which it doesn't do when it does its own DSD decoding. Bitstream Blu-ray lights the DTS MA icons on the Denon. Everything works fine, with one exception below. The SD upconversion is probably one of the most important features of a premium player, as it is difficult to do well. The upconversion of the BDP-83 is definitely better than the 980 and also better than my Toshiba HD-D2 HD DVD. I like the feel of the remote and the ability to remember positions of up to 5 discs. I feel the manual should make a little clearer the fact that this position memory does not work for many Blu-ray discs. The one exception is that I was able to reproduce slow/fast/backup problems with a DTS CD. The April 22 firmware update did not crash with this disc; it just didn't do the forward or reverse. Since this is a lesser-known legacy format this is not a serious problem. I would have liked to test XvidD support, but I have not had time. I know Oppo will continue with firmware releases. I enthusiastically vote for public release.

This is the best audio-video investment I have ever made. It is truly a Universal Player and it's performance is outstanding in all modes. Users are encouraged to test the Picture Adjustment settings with DVDs being up converted. If your display supports 1080p 24Hz video you will be astounded by the images this player can produce with DVDs. Blu-Ray performance is stellar; Audio quality in all modes is pristine. Play your old CDs using the dedicated Stereo Outputs and you will be blown away by what you hear for the first time with this player. Oppo has just raised the bar again!

Were this solely a dedicated two channel SACD/CD/HDCD player, played through its upgraded stereo analog outs, the post-April 6 BDP-83 easily would be worth its current selling price. Fast BluRay loading, flawless upscaling of SDVDs and internal decoding of the new hi-rez soundtracks literally can be treated as free extras.

Continued DTS CD speed issues aside, there are no other issues that I have encountered since installing the latest firmware (20-0417) that do not work for my HT uses nor that lead me to believe this machine is not ready for general release.

I have had the BDP-83 for almost two weeks now so it is time to place my vote. This is a spectacular unit to say the least. I have played Blu-rays, SD DVDs, CDs, SACDs, HDCDs and some DVD-A too. The quality of the video and the audio is incredible!!!! The only hiccup was with the DVD-As of course, which has begun to be addressed by the latest firmware update. I feel that yes vote is totally justified, even though it will not totally support DVD-A. I know that Oppo will, with future firmware updates, take care of this problem. I love this player and I am so glad that I waited and that I was chosen for the 2nd round of the EAP program.

So far I am very pleased with my OPPO BDP-83. I just installed the BDP83-18-0402 firmware to see if it had an effect on the AV/Sync problems I had noticed when playing back standard DVDs. I should have kept better track of the number of times I had this problem but alas I did not. But I would estimate around 20% of the discs. It happened most recently while viewing the new Punisher disc. A 10ms delay adjustment in HDMI options always seems to do the trick. I have not noticed AV/Sync problems with BLU-Ray discs. By the way, the upscaling of standard DVDs is phenomenal. Which brings be to a different subject. PLEASE, PLEASE make this player region free with an RCE override. It seems a great pity and waste of this machines PAL/NTSC conversion capabilities to restrict playback to Region 1 dvds only. As a movie buff , as most of your customers undoubtedly are, I can tell you that there are many excellent films that are simply not available in Region 1. Many fine foreign films are never released here but are available elsewhere, particularly in regions 2 and 4 as well as others. As you no doubt are aware, Region code enforcement has been brought up as a possible violation of World Trade Organization free trade agreements. In fact, the governments of both Australia and New Zealand are claiming that DVD players that enforce region coding may violate their Trade Practices Acts. The European Union has also voiced concerns that region coding is solely an attempt to enforce price differentials and may well join the effort to eliminate this practice. Since region free machines by major manufacturers, e.g., Sony, Panasonic etc. are readily available for purchase here ( I bought one for my daughter to watch Japanese and Korean videos), I don’t know of any impediments preventing OPPO from being region free and it may actually be an incentive for some customers. If you have any doubts about doing this why don’t you poll your customers?

I would really like to cast a "yes" vote for the BDP-83, but I feel that there are still too many little bugs to be worked out. All of the Blu-ray discs I have tried worked great with a fairly fast load time. My problem has been with DVD playback. Although the picture looks great from my DVDs, the BDP-83 still has a problem recognizing the proper menu size (4:3 vs. 16:9). Also the player had a problem with a few of my HDCDs.

Very happy with the unit. Watched 6 Blu-Rays, 3 SD-DVD's with various audio features (5.1 True-HD, etc)with no problems. Played several standard audio CD's and mp3 audio CD's. Used analog 7.1 audio out through AVR and HDMI audio/video direct to 1080p JVC LCoS TV. No DVD-A or SACD's available.

Following the latest Firmware update, I think that the BDP-83 is O.K. for release to the general population. It is now playing the one DVD-A (The Who's "Tommy") in my (pretty small) collection that the BDP-83 had issues with. One issue that remains is that there appear to be gaps between the tracks on playback of several DVD-A's that I tried, which still needs work.

For my uses (99% Blu-ray, DVD, CD, mp3), this player has been exceptional. There are still issues with scene transitions and minor lip sync on SD DVD 24p that my old HD DVD player that cost half as much handles better. However, OPPO is reportedly working on this, and it is not bad enough on the material I tested to vote no. Overall, this is by far the best disc player I have ever owned. VRS is excellent. UPDATE 0417 Firmware: The DVD 24p lip sync issues appear to be gone. I haven't seen any transition issues yet, but I don't have the rental I saw it on anymore to re-test. Still a thumbs up from me.

I have changed my vote to YES as the result of the 402 firmware update. Prior to that there were a number of BBC SD DVDs that would not play because of a copy protection scheme that the BDP-83 choked on. This firmware release has resolved the issue and therefore I have no further issues to prevent me from voting for a general release.

   1. New ROM upgrade installed on player. This solves playback problem with two problem DVD-Audio discs cited earlier. 2. Suggestion: during ROM upgrade - show number % completed on screen as well as on front of player + progress bar. 3. All discs now working OK with new ROM (DVD, CD, SACD, Blu-Ray, DVD-A).

Purchased the player mainly for playback of growing Blu-Ray and SD-DVD collection. Found the picture and sound quality of both formats to be superb. No problems found with SACD or CD playback yet. However, have encountered A/V sync issues with SD-DVD(minimized with 24p disabled) and recently encountered the same issue with Blu-Ray upon resuming normal play after viewing slow motion - Hitting stop then play got A/V back on track. Would like to see these A/V sync issues resolved before general release, which I'm sure Oppo is diligently working on improving. Menus are straighforward and really find the on-screen display useful during playback. Build quality, finish, and connections are well thought-out and it fits in perfectly with my other HT compenents. User Manual is also very well written. Considering that most movie playback consists of dialogue (and the occasional house-rocking explosions), nothing kills the HT experience when sound/voice is out of sync with the picture. Will await the next firmware release before reconsidering my vote... Update: After upgrading with the latest firmware(BDP83-20-0417), the A/V Sync issues encountered previously no longer exist, and I can now enjoy my movies in their full glory in either format. I will now change my vote to "yes" without any reservations. Good job Oppo and please keep up the excellent work and support!

From an overall standpoint the player is ready for release. The major issue I still have with the player is with being able to set speaker distances with more than a 6 foot difference between mains and sub (i.e. 11 feet for mains and 4 feet for sub does not work, you can only set the sub at 5 feet or greater). I would also like to see Oppo ensure that bass managment is consistent across all formats for sub levels (both LFE and redirected bass) with the analog sub output. Otherwise, the picture quality is outstanding, audio is very good for a player at this price point, and the features, speed, menu/UI, and remote are all excellent - great job Oppo!

System:OPPO BDP-83, OPPO DV-981HD, PLAYSTATION3; ONKYO TX-SR876 7.1 A/V REC.; SAMSUNG HL67A750A1F LED/DLP FED TO THE POLK RM-7600 7.1 SPEAKER SYSTEM W/PSW 650. OPPO has done it again, they have successfully produced an affordable hybrid dvd player that is the "Gold-Standard" of performance and features. The competing products - certainly capable and also quite good performance wise - are trumped by the affordablilty of the OPPO unit. Blu-ray discs are amazing and the sound that the Blu-Ray disc has encoded is correctly recongnized creating a total enveloping movie experience. SD back up dvd's are upconverted to near Blu-ray levels - in fact, if the sound on the SD discs were a little better an arguement could be made as to the source material. Upconversion is better out of the BDP-83 than is from the DV-981HD which I consider the BEST SD-DVD player in the marketplace. The OPPO BD player edges out the Sony Playstation3 in both picture detail and sound - but credit given where credit is due - the PS3 is a good BD payer - but not in the league of the OPPO. As for the SACD and DVD-Audio, I have not had a chance to sit and do a critical listening test to make a judgement here, but even if there are some quirks as some of the other EAP reviews suggest, the OPPO didication to quality will "fix" the issue(s)through a firware update. The aesthetics and layout of the player and remote are well thought out and emit a sense of quality. Packaging of the BDP-83 is also top-shelf quality - far superior to competing products. So, the question as to whether or not the player should be released as a finale production unit - I vote a resounding yes! Thank you OPPO, your BD player is ready for Prime-Time !

I thought about this vote for several weeks now and I simply can't vote "Yes" at this time...at least not yet. The good news is that the bugs that are holding me back are relatively minor but they are preventing me from having a perfect listening event. The Good: 1-I've had no problems at all concerning movies...no sync issues, no missing audio tracks, etc. The picture quality is top-notch. I'm liking what I'm seeing as far as upconverted standard dvds go. I'm sure whatever imperfections I'm seeing are there to begin with so what can you do? 2-The sound quality is amazing. It surpasses both my AMC CD8b cd player & my Firestone Audio Fubar DAC. The Not So Good: 1-The worst offender is the repeating & endless playback of random cd tracks. This simply has to be addressed. 2-DVD-A doesn't support seamless playback so my copy of Beatles-Love is useless. I also cannot get to the menu anymore to choose an alternate audio track. 3-I cannot program a cd in a specific order. This is a pretty basic function that I would expect from a universal player and one that I find much more useful than shuffle. 4-After playing a DTS-CD all regular redbook cds will play back too fast until you power down & back up. 5-During SACD playback pressing the Pure Audio button not only restarts the track but also changes from 2-channel back to multi-channel. You then have to go back to 2-channel mode restarting the track yet again if 2-channel is what you're wanting. This may seem like nitpicking to many but these things are important to me. I am definitely keeping the player and overall I'm happy with it but it still needs another firmware update that will address these bugs. I have confidence that OPPO will get these kinks ironed out soon.

The player has performed well for me without incident. It's primary use as a Blu-Ray player has exceeded the three (3) players I used prior (Sony BDP-S1, Panasonic DMP-BD30 & Sony S-350). It has also played every SACD & DVD-A I've put in the tray. With the last firmware update everything is as stable or more than any of the prior players I've purchased. Future firmware updates will only make this player better. Oppo has another winner on its hands. Thanks Oppo, good luck with the official product launch.

My yes vote is based on: 1) after some moderate use with BD, DVD, HDCD, CD and SACD, I only had one lip synch problem with a BD that was corrected by stoping playback and restarting (So far, I have not had any problems using the newest firmware); and, 2) I expect that Oppo will continue to provide new firmware to address the remaining bugs. Its a great product that is ready for general release. Thanks Oppo!

I have nothing but good things to say about this player especially after the most recent firmware upgrade, which I beautifully installed over the Internet. This by all means is a universal player. For example, this player allows me to play my SACDs using DSD over HDMI (wow!), but also offers PCM over HDMI for folks with receivers/amps that don't support DSD. In terms of Blu-Ray, first of all, lightening fast, whether it's powering up, or reading the disc. Or, even firmware upgrades super fast. I have not had any problems with any of my over 100 Blu-Ray discs. They all played fine regardless whether the source was profile 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0, it all worked fine. In terms of playing back regular DVDs I have used the 1080p/24 conversion and it showed amazing reults. I don't know of any other players that even offer such a function. Also, my PAL DVDs play just fine on my NTSC Plasma (bear in mind though this player cannot be made regioncode-free, at least not that I know of). My vote is a strong "YES" to release this product to the public. Update 05/15/2009: Absolutely fascinating to see how fast this player is updating the firmware itself over the Internet.

This is the 2nd vote replacing my former one. I am now satisfy with the BDP-83, as my basic needs are achieved. This universal player is ready to the market for buyer, like me, who need 1 player to play Blue Ray, SACD and DVD-A with internal lossless and core sound track decoding to processor or receiver with only 1 set of analog ins. The performance on blue ray is superior in Video and Audio. SD DVD up conversion is at least on par to other blue ray players. SACD and DVD-A is just icy sugar on the cake and I do not care much even the performance is not as good as a dedicated music disc player. I understand that OPPO is still trying hard to fix some of the issues on SACD and DVD-A. Hope the solutions will come out soon and post out the final firmware in the near future. OPPO has job well done on BDP-83 on present performance. Congratulations.

As a previous OPPO products owner I already know firsthand about their outstanding quality, value, features and customer support that are second to none. So I put off purchasing a Blu-ray player waiting instead for an OPPO to become available, well the BDP-83 was worth the wait. With incredible picture and sound quality, fast Blu-ray load time, excellent dvd up-conversion, SACD and DVD-A playback, two USB ports, a great illuminated remote with discrete codes, the included high quality HDMI cable, and automatic firmware update notifications with easy updates over the internet, what a feature set. The excellent owners manual and easy to navigate and understand menu system is well thought out and has so many useful settings that you can tweak your system to peak performance with the included benchmark disc. I have had some minor disc compatibility issues and some glitches but the latest firmware updates has resolved most of them to the point that the BDP-83 is now stable and ready for release. I wish the BDP-83 had the video capture feature of my DV-980H, I spoke to OPPO about this and they said there have been many request about adding this feature. I would like to thank everyone at OPPO for continuing to design quality products of high value and state of the art performance for all of us to enjoy and as always the great customer service.

With the new firmware installed, everything is working perfectly. Every Blu-Ray disc I've tried has performed flawlessly, BD live works as well, and I have experienced no loss of lip-synch when watching upscaled standard-definition DVDs. And a special thanks to Oppo tech support for turning me on to the MKV format so that I can play my MP4 files without transcoding. VOB plays perfectly as well.

Being a first time OPPO owner i dont know what to expect. All i know is that i have been reading and hearing rave review about its product. When i was invited to be in the 2nd eap, i was excited and happy to say the least. Having the player for almost a month now doing various test with the player and my current set up. All i can say is that the BDP-83 is ready for general public. Playing Bluray movies and SD DVD gave me an excellent feeling. I have tried SACD and DVD-AUDIO that i own and none of them gave me a problem. Sure i know that there are some minor hick ups that is associated with playing those music cd's and DVD. But with all the audio and video that i used and tested. I didnt experience any problem or what so ever that will make me to vote no. I am voting YES because i have not encountered one problem playing movies and audio cd's and dvd. Updating the firmware was a breeze being that the player is connected to my router. It took more or less 3 to 4 minutes tops to fully update the system. Also, the customer service is superb and reliable. Having a good player is good in my book but getting a wonderful and helpful tech support will always be an A in my book. Over all experience was great. And for that, i recommend base on my own experience and observation that this player is ready for public release.

While my abilities to test all of the BDP-83's features are limited, I was quite pleased with the unit as it came from the factory. I did, however, have a handshake/colorspace problem after installing the 18-0402 software update. This has been resolved with the latest 20-0417 update. To sum up, I'm very impressed with the performance of this little black box; even the packaging is first-rate. Exceptional job, Oppo.

Although some minor foibles still exist (notably in SD DVD lipsynch), I have been nothing but impressed by this player. It has overwhelmingly unseated my previous player (pio 51) and is ironically in a more stable state despite the other being out for nearly nine months. Blu ray performance is very good with great tweaking menus. SD DVD upconversion is without comparison. Well done Oppo and get this player out to a hungry public!!!

As a video player, this thing is spot-on perfect, as far as I can tell. But I'm experiencing faint (but distracting) popping sounds when I send DSD from multi-channel SACDs over HDMI to my receiver. And some HDCDs, as someone else has noted, lead to loud crackling and pops over HDMI. My hope is for the BDP-83 to be a universal player for all of my discs. Right now, it's not quite there. It's a great player, and I’d probably purchase it at the list price for the Blu-ray and DVD capability alone. But I think the SACD and HDCD bugs need to be worked out before wide-release.

If I could vote yes twice, I would. The 4/22 firmware update cleared ALL my issues. Come on EAP participants - just vote already! This is my first Blu-Ray player and my 2nd Oppo. It was a breeze to set up. So far it has performed flawlessly on any Blu-Ray or DVD I've played on it, even PAL Region 0 DVDs and DVD+/-Rs, and some disks that won't play on production versions of other players I own. Upconvert is better than my Oppo DV-981HD. Thank you to Oppo for the chance to participate in the EAP.

Although the latest firmware addressed some of my concerns I feel at least one more update is needed for general release. There are still issues with DVD-A and HDCDs that need to be fixed. There are also some specific DVDs and BDs that have issues but for the most part those formats are fine. With the latest firmware I have decided to change my vote to Yes. There are still issues with DVD-A but steady progress has been made. At this point I think I could live with the quirks remaining but am hopeful and confident that Oppo will continue to address the issues with updates.

Overall the BDP-83 is a great player. While I'm sure there are still some unresolved glitches and issues, for the majority of people who are looking to buy a BR player, even a universal one, will likely have a totally smooth experience. That coupled with Oppo's reputation for continuously working on firmwares after a players release make me feel it is ready.

I vote No because HDCD decoding does not work the way it should. After two FW releases that fixed all the problems I encountered in BD and SDVD playback, this player is very close to perfect, and is a keeper in all categories as a top BD player. I simply believe when the player is released to the general public all advertized features should work. Certainly, if you are not going to play CD's on this machine please ignore my No vote.

I have been playing with the BDP-83 for over 10 days now. I have played 15 blu-ray disks, dozens of standard DVD disks, the Roxy music SACD CD and misl. media files from a USB drive. So far the BDP-83 has performed absolutely perfect for me. Not one single problem. The blu-ray movies look incredible, standard DVD's look as good as my Comcast HD channels and my A/V reciever has never sounded so good. OPPO has a real gem here.

With the release of the 20-0417 firmware, I feel the BDP-83 is finally ready for release. I have tested my unit with CDs, BDs, HDCDs, SACDs, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and DVD-As. Prior to the last firmware updates, I experienced random CD track repeats and visual artifacts during DVD-A playback. With the 20-417 firmware, these problems appear to be fixed. I used the 5.1 analog outputs on the back of the unit and never experienced any audio/video sync problems. My remaining complaints are relatively small. Movie file support: The player supports only 3 container formats (MKV, AVI, MPG). There is no MPEG-4 support, and no way to produce MKV files with open source or QuickTime-based tools. Universal Remote Support: The key codes for the Red Green Yellow and Blue keys do not appear to be loaded into the Logitech Harmony Remote database. Zoom: My 42" plasma TV works best with the Underscan zoom level; a default setting would be nice. Documentation: The user manual needs some clarifications. The supported movie file formats needs to be mentioned. The description of the Audio key on the remote is rather vague ("Change audio language or channel") when the key is primarily used to change between stereo and multi-channel playback. The SAP and PIP mark setup settings mention "avoid distraction during normal movie playing" when turned off; OPPO support says "try enabling them to get PIP and SAP special features for certain BDs". Improved firmware update support: while I appreciate the need to "reset to factory defaults" after a firmware update, it is a pain and would be useful to avoid.

This is my first Blu-ray player & 2nd OPPO player. I was very pleased with the packaging. The supplied HDMI cable is of good quality. I was even more surprised to find a calibration disc included. The "build" of the player seems to be very good; appears to be "sturdy" -- carries some "weight". Set-up was very easy and liked both the "easy" initial set-up mode and the more detailed set-up option for later. Here are my performance comments: CD: through the coax digital output, very nice sound, very similar sound to my Adcom CD player. Upconverting DVD: through supplied HDMI cable to a 50" plasma 720p display -- improvement over my previous oppo upconverting DVD player. Blu-Ray: Disc loaded very quickly and looked incredibly well. No problems noted watching the disc. AVCHD: Was able to play a DVD that contained AVHCD video on both the 8cm & 5 1/4" discs with no trouble. Both discs loaded quickly and video looked great.

I only tested the unit with DVD and Blu-ray discs (no CD or HDCD) so my vote is limited only to what I tested. I experienced two minor issues: (1) online download of the first firmware update failed. I worked around it by storing it in a USB drive and running the update from the flash memory. The second firmware updated downloaded directly to the unit without any problems (2) On my first day I did not have an optical digital cable and I connected to the receiver via analog RCA connectors. The center speaker did not work. The problem was resolved with the optical cable. While these two issues would not disqualify the unit from going mainstream. I believe the first problem was resolved with the new firmware. And if the second has not been resolved yet, I would argue that whoever wants to use a Blu-ray player connected to a receiver via RCA connectors, then, well, go and get an Insignia player from Wal-Mart. No need to even purchase a quality player like the Oppo.

I do have one issue regarding CD playback - I'm not sure the manner in which the BDP-83 rewinds and fast-forwards through a disc is optimum... Not being able to rewind through previous songs ( and the lack of being able to tell where you are in a song while rewinding or forwarding ) is not the norm (at least through CD and DVD players-not sure about other Blu-ray players) It was a surprise to me, and according to Oppo, the player is working as intended... possibly just a problem with my player since all rewind and fast forward speeds seem the same to me.. However, everything else about this player so far has been nearly flawless, so it's still a yes vote from me

My unit has issues with audio cd's (redbook). It will randomly repeat songs for no reason and it may only do this once or may repeat the same song over and over (I was stopped it after 15 times playing the same song). Some SACD's sound slightly compressed when compared to my Philips unit. So far BLU-RAY is fine as is the decoding of the High Resolution Audio on them, but I am a little let down by the up conversion of standarad DVD's; always a hallmark of OPPO players. I think it needs just a little more work, either that or my unit is deffective. DSA

With the release of the 0417 firmware, most of issues with the player have been resolved. Like many others, I trust OPPO will continue to refine the firmware. I think it is ready for prime time. Thank you OPPO and good luck.

I have had the player now for about 1½ weeks. It is well built and has generally performed very well. Most of the issues I had have been resolved with the April 6th firmware update. Notably, the recent firmware update has improved DVD-A playback and seems to have somewhat improved the sluggish remote control response. It also corrected some skipping and audio dropouts on burned CDs and HDMI handshake issues. I have the player set up to output LPCM over HDMI to my pre/pro and so far, with one exception, all CDs, HDCD, DVDs, Blu-ray, SACD and DVD-A discs that I have played, now play fine. The only remaining issue I have identified is that the DTS 5.1 audio track on a Porcupine Tree DVD-A only plays back in stereo. The DVD-A track plays fine though. As DVD-A playback is still in a preliminary state and I believe that Oppo is aware of the DTS 5.1 issue, I’m sure that this will be corrected in a future firmware update. Video output on both Blu-ray and SD DVDs is excellent. I have used both internal scaling and source direct to my pre/pro (Anthem AVM50). Internal decoding of lossless formats works well and is definitely a noticeable improvement compared to the lossy formats on SD DVDs. As with many Blu-ray players, there will be future firmware upgrades to address remaining issues. In my opinion, however, the remaining issues are minor (exclusive of additional DVD-A refinement) and this player is at 95%. In my system, this unit now performs very well. I commend Oppo on taking their time to produce a fine piece of equipment and it is certainly now at a sufficient state that I can recommend a general release. I wouldn’t have said that before the recent firmware release.

THIRD ENTRY;I have installed the latest update of 4/22 /09 and tried a few of each format of audio disc and one bluray. Results are perfect. I have now changed my vote to yes and am very very happy with my player but would encourage OPPO service to keep up the excellent work in responding and issuing timely updates.Great product. SECOND ENTRY;Have installed the 4/6 update and can now play DVD-Audio.Still experience some issues including CD and HDCD so not yet ready to change my vote. The average purchaser at launch should have no functional issues on well established formats.FIRST ENTRY My no vote is based on non functional DVD Audio, some drop outs on sacd, and concern regarding lip sync. I believe it would be a major "opportunity lost" for OPPO to launch before fixing the remaining bugs including DVD-A using player in bitstream output. The player is close to being great, if fixed at launch, and should be universal.I have at least 3 friends waiting for such a product to replace a ps3+other player with one good universal box. Denon's high end universal model is just way too expensive but others will follow so OPPO needs to get in very soon but not until the BDP-83 does the brand full justice. I anticipate OPPO will do the right thing and will have a great player which will deserve all the great cred it will get. I have only used the product with HDMI connection to an Integra processor. Therefore I cannot comment on it's analog audio performance. But I have tried the player's video processing vs Silicone Optix Reon in the processor and both seem about the same on the basis of a subjective judgement over only a few movies. That means very good.

Aside from a few minor DVD-A issues it had—most of those have been resolved with the latest firmware upgrade—I thought the BDP-83 was very close to being ready for prime time. Now with the firmware updates, it is. It’s played every DVD, CD, and SACD I’ve thrown at it, and has done so with aplomb. It loads more quickly than any Blu-Ray player in my experience, and its sonic and visual performance for a $499 player is nothing short of stunning. I’ve thrown it against several players costing MANY multiples of its asking price, and it’s come up smiling in each case. Its reproduction of John Carpenter’s “The Thing” Blu-Ray was revelatory. I’ve never seen that movie look and sound so good, even when I played it through more expensive players. If Oppo can hold the price under $800, the BDP-83 is going be a stone-cold killer. Even if they can’t, it’ll still stand proudly among much more expensive units. It’s that good.

The April 21st Firmware release has made my BDP-83 ready for public release. I currently am experiencing no DVD Audio issues, I have not seen or heard any issues with my SACDs, Blurays or DVDs. I have not tested Dual Discs or HDCDs and I understand there are a couple as yet unaddressed issues with them as well. However, based on the amount of fixes in the April 21st Firmware release, I believe that the BDP-83 is now ready for public release. If there is another firmware release, it seems that it will cover most if not all of the total known issues. In the mean time, for a large percentage of potential BDP-83 customers the product is ready for Prime Time and is realisticly just a couple of firmware releases away from being close to perfect for every potential Universal Disc Player prospect in the market today. OPPO is on the cusp of releasing the most advanced multi-format universal BD player on the market and at a price point that no one in the audio industry can touch.

When playing HDCD CD's there are compatibility issues with the BDP-83 HDMI output to my Denon AVR 3808 receiver. I have discovered some issues with standard CD's that need to be corrected. For example: Sheryl Crow-Tuesday Night Music Club, and Stevie Nicks-Rock a Little will cause a high vibration to occur as if something is spinning unbalanced. I have not had these issues with my PS3. I will keep testing and change my vote as issues are corrected.

The player is by far the most refined Blu-ray to hit the market. Fast power on, load, and play really set this player apart. I also like the fact that I don't have to buy an SD-card just to use any sort of BD-Live features thanks to built in memory. As far as playback, the picture is beautiful and sound is great. I have yet to try SACD, but I REALLY hope Oppo adds DVD-Audio to make this the ultimate player to cover all the bases - with that, there would be no equal on the market!

Latest firmware fixed all my issues with DVD-Audio and Blu-ray has been fine since day one. Only issue I still have is a vibration problem on a single DVD-Audio disk. Thought the subwoofer had a grounding problem until I tracked it down to the player. I assume the disk is unbalanced.

Products used with BDP-83: Samsung LN52A750 52" LCD Thus far I have owned the Oppo 981 DVD player and have been overjoyed out of the performance with it's upconversion to 1080I and let my tv's better quality video deinterlacer do the rest for my dvd collection. Since the purchase of the BDP-83, I can understand the differences between the ABT VRS processing and the 971's chip. Far better picture quality with no artifacts or jaggies. I have left off all 120 refresh rates on the TV to assure original depth and motion of the dvd's. It is definitely the finest dvd reproduction I have ever seen, and would expect the same from the 983 universal player. I have not yet used Blu-ray in this player, but expect to once prices go down and will change to that format for future usage. Audio cd's in the BDP-83 are definitely the cleanest I have heard of any cd player used so far including the dvd-981 series. Unless you are playing compressed music on cd's, you will hear parts of the original like never before. I have yet to use SACD's. By far, you can't beat the purchase price of the BDP-83. ANything close will be in the $1000 plus range and still benchmark the same score as oppo's players. Also, there is nothing else that plays these formats and includes SACD capability. Therefor, I would take this over reference blu ray players by denon, marantz,or yamaha.

The i% quirks this player exhibits should not prevent its release. The firmware is mature enough that 99% of the public will never have issues. One final firmware tighting up to fix the minor isses that exist and I think its good to go. Certainly the hardware is first rate and the best in class as far as I am concerned. Way to go OPPO you have a winner ready to come out.

I have been using the player for a month now. I've had no problems with the Blu-ray, DVD, CD and SACD discs that I have played. The menus are great. The player is quick and responsive. The drive is a little noisy when initially reading a disc, but quiet while playing. It is great looking and built very well. The remote is very nice. Oppo has been very good about updating the firmware regularly. I feel that for the most part the player is ready for prime time. I am confident that Oppo will address any current and future problems. I believe that customers for their products are not the average electronics consumer. That they are willing and completely capable of installing firmware updates as they become available. So no, it does not have to be perfect for general release. Complicated electronics like this are always a work in progress and never really completely done.

Update. UNIVERSAL PLAYER. That's what it was really all about anyway, wasn't it? Us Oppo fans wanted the BDP-83 to be the first successful market-release of a top-notch "universal" Blu-ray player. We knew Oppo would have all other bases covered very well, including SACD, but then it all hinged on the compatibility of this latest "universal" Oppo with a currently almost defunct format, namely, the DVD-A. I, not possessing any DVD-As up until recently, never had much utility for such in a player, BUT I STILL WANTED IT !? And, in anticipation of the advent of such a player (BDP-83 EAP-2 participant or not) acquired several DVD-As of my own. April 21, 2009: Now, after being satisfied with my latest phase of testing, I can AGAIN definitively vote an enthusiatic "YES". THE BDP-83 DOES WHAT OPPO HAS SET OUT FOR IT TO DO, everything I want it to do, and now does it very well. Tonight, I re-tested "the Beatles "LOVE"" DVD-A, as well as several others, and they all played flawlessly and with wonderful euphony. Unfortunately, the player still has some glitches for those with HDCD-decoding processors that get a digital audiostream from the Oppo, but my bet is that Oppo will have those issues mended soon enough. And, although the player will continue to be refined with additional new firmware releases, IMO, THERE ARE NO FURTHER REASONS TO DELAY THE COMMERCIAL RELEASE OF THIS PLAYER ANY LONGER. You're all in for a treat !!! I suspect the BDP-83 will be the most capable universal Blu-ray player for quite some time to come, bar none. So - YES, YES, & YES !!!

The OPPO 83 has been in my system for 10 days and I have encountered no problems with Blu-Ray or regular CDs. Interest in audio for this installation includes SACD, HDCD and CD. I chose not to buy DVD-A but have many SACD discs. The OPPO seems to produce a slightly superior BD image and up-converted DVDs are at least as good as other more expensive players I have used. The OPPO seems to be an excellent well thought out product and will be even better with a few firmware fixes for identified situations. Fan attach needs to be more secure and would like auto power down feature.

Connections are (BDP-83) --> (Marantz SR8100) --> (Samsung LN52A630) with HDMI all the way. I used Easy Setup with HDMI, 1080p, 16:9 Wide/Auto, Compatible. As I intend to use the 83 for video only, I tested only SD and Blu-ray DVDs. (I realize that many of the reported problems have been with audio discs, of which I have none.) I found no problems with the DVDs I tested, and video performance was outstanding for both SD and Blu-ray. I did encounter a lock-up of the 83 when attempting to read media files from an improperly-formatted USB thumb drive. The manual warns of this, and power cycling is the only solution. After properly formatting the thumb drive, media files played as described in the manual. I recommend that OPPO have the unit display an error, rather than locking up, when an improperly-formatted USB device is connected.

This is my first BD player I was waiting for Oppo to release one and here it is. What a great player after reading all the problems other BD players had I was happy I waited for this. I have the 83 hooked up with analog inputs to an older Yamaha A/V Receiver (RX-V1500) and HDMI directly to a 720p Rear projection LCD. My equipment is a little old and doesn’t take full advantage of the capabilities of the 83 but am excited for when I do upgrade to a 1080p display I will be all set. The analog outputs are a wonderful feature since I can enjoy the new audio formats (DTS-HDMA and Dolby True HD) from my older receiver. I’ve tested some BD’s both owned and rented, SD’s, DVD-A, SACD, HDCD, CD, and pictures and AVI files from a thumb drive. Since the latest FW Everything has played well. The FW upgrade was a seamless process over the Ethernet connection which I have connected to a Game Adapter bridge on my Wireless network. I have used the BD Live feature on the few BD disks that I have tried without any major issues, Oppo has to be one of the best companies I have ever had dealings with and I am in purchasing so I deal with a lot of different Vendors. Great Job Oppo keep it up! This will be the best universal player out there. It would be nice to see one more firmware released before these are available but the latest firmware works just fine for my uses.

My vote is based on my specific need. I want the best possible Blu-ray and DVD player I can get, and the BDP-83 satisfies that need very nicely. This is my first Blu-ray player, so my only comparisons are with what I've read, but the picture and sound are fantastic on an 85" screen. Operating speed seems to be on a par with DVD players I've owned, which is much better than most other players I've read about. DVD playback is also excellent. Images are crisp and smooth, with an absolute minimum of artifacts. I haven't done a head-to-head comparison with my OPPO DV-980H, but the SD picture is definitely better than the already good picture from that player. I haven't had any lip-synch problems with DVDs, although I haven't tried any of the discs reported to have problems. Bottom line - I'm keeping mine. I'm confidant that OPPO will continue to fix the remaining glitches. One would like a product to be perfect before it's released to the public, but with something this complex that doesn't seem to be possible. It's important to remember that you're not likely to see this player at a big box store any time soon, with massive returns because it won't play certain DVD-A or HDCD discs properly. I'm guessing that the majority of customers for the BDP-83, especially the high-end ones who are most interested in it as a universal player, have been glued to this web site and the AVS forum ever since rumors of an OPPO Blu-ray player surfaced. Thanks to OPPO's full disclosure way of handling the Beta and EAP programs, no one's going to get blindsided.

Every Blu-Ray disc I've tried has performed flawlessly, and I have experienced no lip-synch when watching upscaled SD-DVDs. Although, there are still minor issues to the performance of the BDP-83, with the new firmware (4/06/09 version) installed, everything is working at the high level expected of an OPPO product.    I love the BDP-83. Every Blu-ray disc that I have thrown at it has played perfectly with the exception of one 1080p special feature (The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008) where I encountered lip sync issue after pausing it. I hit rewind and then play and it was in sync again. I don't own many SACD's but the ones I do have played fine. The sound is great being bitstreamed to my Pioneer Elite AVR. My favorite part about the player is the fast load times. This is my first Oppo product and I can tell you right now it won't be my last.

After the latest firmware update, I feel the 83 is ready to be released to the general public. The build quality is excellent. The speed of the 83 on BD playback is impressive. I have tested about a dozen BD’s, and playback has been flawless. Upconversion of DVD is outstanding. I would give a slight edge to Oppo over my Toshiba XA2 and Samsung 2550 in terms of upconversion quality. I haven’t experienced any playback issues with DVD. I only have a small amount of SACD and DVD-A to test. All have played without issue. I know others have experienced some issues with DVD-A, and lip-synch, but fortunately I have not experienced any of them. Job well done Oppo!

This Blu-ray player lives up to and surpasses the quality standard established by Oppo with its other DVD players (of which I owned them all). I don’t see any reason not to make this product available to the general public.    Watched 4 BluRay's without any issues so far. Picture quality outstanding on my Pioneer 151FD Plasma. This is my 1st BluRay, so cannot compare vs others. The only disappointment is in the SD DVD upscaling. I have a Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player and in 3 tests I've done (not scientific), the Toshiba performed noticeably better in low light scenes than the Oppo. With the Oppo, the darker scenes appear to have some very slight noise and fuzziness; definitely more so than the Toshiba. Could this be my particular unit? Others cite the SD DVD upcaling as a strong point. Overall, I still vote Yes at this point in time - will do more viewing and update comments if needed.

Issue remains with Blu-ray playback of DTS encoded discs. "Normal" 5.1 is spot on, but DTS encoding experiences what can best be described as distortion in the audio track resembling popping/thumping noises. Most prevalent at lower relative audio levels when the audio track is primarily speech. For me, this appeared to have gotten worse with the last firmware upgrade. As most of the discs I have recently purchased are in DTS format, this has become quite a nuisance.
