Early Adoption Program

Second Round Early Adoption Program

We greatly appreciate the feedback, comments and encouragement from the first 50 early adoption customers. The number of "YES" votes from the first round has exceeded our expectation, and therefore we have decided to expand the Early Adoption Program to a second round of 300 customers.

OPPO is a customer-oriented company. The primary goal of the Early Adoption Program is to be sure that the BDP-83 meets our customers' expectations. For the second round, we will randomly select 300 names from those who signed up for the Blu-ray Interest List, and send invitations to order on Monday, March 16th.

These combined 350 customers from the first & second rounds of the Early Adoption Program will help us in deciding when to release the BDP-83 to the public. If a supermajority (at least 70%) votes "Yes" because they feel that the player is ready, we will release it to the general public. Customers who signed up on the OPPO BDP-83 interest list early will be given a higher priority to purchase a unit.

I've used this player to play Blu-rays, DVDs, CDs, DVD-Audios, and Super Audio CDs and everything works extremely well with the latest (05/04/09) firmware. DVD deinterlacing and upscaling are superb. Blu-ray load times are very fast and they look and sound wonderful. Overall I am very pleased with the BDP-83.

This player has an impressive feature set that delivers what it promises. I have tested several SACD and DVD-Audio, Blu-ray 7.1 DTS-MA (Chronicles of Narnia, Prince Caspian), DTS CD, SD DVD (Star Wars Episode 1 DD 5.1EX) working with a Denon 2809 HDMI 1.3 receiver and Samsung 4665 LCD HDTV. I have tested the SACD in both bitstream and PCM modes. In PCM mode the Denon lights its 24-bit icon, which it doesn't do when it does its own DSD decoding. Bitstream Blu-ray lights the DTS MA icons on the Denon. Everything works fine, with one exception below. The SD upconversion is probably one of the most important features of a premium player, as it is difficult to do well. The upconversion of the BDP-83 is definitely better than the 980 and also better than my Toshiba HD-D2 HD DVD. I like the feel of the remote and the ability to remember positions of up to 5 discs. I feel the manual should make a little clearer the fact that this position memory does not work for many Blu-ray discs. The one exception is that I was able to reproduce slow/fast/backup problems with a DTS CD. The April 22 firmware update did not crash with this disc; it just didn't do the forward or reverse. Since this is a lesser-known legacy format this is not a serious problem. I would have liked to test XvidD support, but I have not had time. I know Oppo will continue with firmware releases. I enthusiastically vote for public release.

This is the best audio-video investment I have ever made. It is truly a Universal Player and it's performance is outstanding in all modes. Users are encouraged to test the Picture Adjustment settings with DVDs being up converted. If your display supports 1080p 24Hz video you will be astounded by the images this player can produce with DVDs. Blu-Ray performance is stellar; Audio quality in all modes is pristine. Play your old CDs using the dedicated Stereo Outputs and you will be blown away by what you hear for the first time with this player. Oppo has just raised the bar again!

Were this solely a dedicated two channel SACD/CD/HDCD player, played through its upgraded stereo analog outs, the post-April 6 BDP-83 easily would be worth its current selling price. Fast BluRay loading, flawless upscaling of SDVDs and internal decoding of the new hi-rez soundtracks literally can be treated as free extras.

Continued DTS CD speed issues aside, there are no other issues that I have encountered since installing the latest firmware (20-0417) that do not work for my HT uses nor that lead me to believe this machine is not ready for general release.

I have had the BDP-83 for almost two weeks now so it is time to place my vote. This is a spectacular unit to say the least. I have played Blu-rays, SD DVDs, CDs, SACDs, HDCDs and some DVD-A too. The quality of the video and the audio is incredible!!!! The only hiccup was with the DVD-As of course, which has begun to be addressed by the latest firmware update. I feel that yes vote is totally justified, even though it will not totally support DVD-A. I know that Oppo will, with future firmware updates, take care of this problem. I love this player and I am so glad that I waited and that I was chosen for the 2nd round of the EAP program.

So far I am very pleased with my OPPO BDP-83. I just installed the BDP83-18-0402 firmware to see if it had an effect on the AV/Sync problems I had noticed when playing back standard DVDs. I should have kept better track of the number of times I had this problem but alas I did not. But I would estimate around 20% of the discs. It happened most recently while viewing the new Punisher disc. A 10ms delay adjustment in HDMI options always seems to do the trick. I have not noticed AV/Sync problems with BLU-Ray discs. By the way, the upscaling of standard DVDs is phenomenal. Which brings be to a different subject. PLEASE, PLEASE make this player region free with an RCE override. It seems a great pity and waste of this machines PAL/NTSC conversion capabilities to restrict playback to Region 1 dvds only. As a movie buff , as most of your customers undoubtedly are, I can tell you that there are many excellent films that are simply not available in Region 1. Many fine foreign films are never released here but are available elsewhere, particularly in regions 2 and 4 as well as others. As you no doubt are aware, Region code enforcement has been brought up as a possible violation of World Trade Organization free trade agreements. In fact, the governments of both Australia and New Zealand are claiming that DVD players that enforce region coding may violate their Trade Practices Acts. The European Union has also voiced concerns that region coding is solely an attempt to enforce price differentials and may well join the effort to eliminate this practice. Since region free machines by major manufacturers, e.g., Sony, Panasonic etc. are readily available for purchase here ( I bought one for my daughter to watch Japanese and Korean videos), I don’t know of any impediments preventing OPPO from being region free and it may actually be an incentive for some customers. If you have any doubts about doing this why don’t you poll your customers?

I would really like to cast a "yes" vote for the BDP-83, but I feel that there are still too many little bugs to be worked out. All of the Blu-ray discs I have tried worked great with a fairly fast load time. My problem has been with DVD playback. Although the picture looks great from my DVDs, the BDP-83 still has a problem recognizing the proper menu size (4:3 vs. 16:9). Also the player had a problem with a few of my HDCDs.

Very happy with the unit. Watched 6 Blu-Rays, 3 SD-DVD's with various audio features (5.1 True-HD, etc)with no problems. Played several standard audio CD's and mp3 audio CD's. Used analog 7.1 audio out through AVR and HDMI audio/video direct to 1080p JVC LCoS TV. No DVD-A or SACD's available.

Following the latest Firmware update, I think that the BDP-83 is O.K. for release to the general population. It is now playing the one DVD-A (The Who's "Tommy") in my (pretty small) collection that the BDP-83 had issues with. One issue that remains is that there appear to be gaps between the tracks on playback of several DVD-A's that I tried, which still needs work.

For my uses (99% Blu-ray, DVD, CD, mp3), this player has been exceptional. There are still issues with scene transitions and minor lip sync on SD DVD 24p that my old HD DVD player that cost half as much handles better. However, OPPO is reportedly working on this, and it is not bad enough on the material I tested to vote no. Overall, this is by far the best disc player I have ever owned. VRS is excellent. UPDATE 0417 Firmware: The DVD 24p lip sync issues appear to be gone. I haven't seen any transition issues yet, but I don't have the rental I saw it on anymore to re-test. Still a thumbs up from me.

I have changed my vote to YES as the result of the 402 firmware update. Prior to that there were a number of BBC SD DVDs that would not play because of a copy protection scheme that the BDP-83 choked on. This firmware release has resolved the issue and therefore I have no further issues to prevent me from voting for a general release.

   1. New ROM upgrade installed on player. This solves playback problem with two problem DVD-Audio discs cited earlier. 2. Suggestion: during ROM upgrade - show number % completed on screen as well as on front of player + progress bar. 3. All discs now working OK with new ROM (DVD, CD, SACD, Blu-Ray, DVD-A).

Purchased the player mainly for playback of growing Blu-Ray and SD-DVD collection. Found the picture and sound quality of both formats to be superb. No problems found with SACD or CD playback yet. However, have encountered A/V sync issues with SD-DVD(minimized with 24p disabled) and recently encountered the same issue with Blu-Ray upon resuming normal play after viewing slow motion - Hitting stop then play got A/V back on track. Would like to see these A/V sync issues resolved before general release, which I'm sure Oppo is diligently working on improving. Menus are straighforward and really find the on-screen display useful during playback. Build quality, finish, and connections are well thought-out and it fits in perfectly with my other HT compenents. User Manual is also very well written. Considering that most movie playback consists of dialogue (and the occasional house-rocking explosions), nothing kills the HT experience when sound/voice is out of sync with the picture. Will await the next firmware release before reconsidering my vote... Update: After upgrading with the latest firmware(BDP83-20-0417), the A/V Sync issues encountered previously no longer exist, and I can now enjoy my movies in their full glory in either format. I will now change my vote to "yes" without any reservations. Good job Oppo and please keep up the excellent work and support!

From an overall standpoint the player is ready for release. The major issue I still have with the player is with being able to set speaker distances with more than a 6 foot difference between mains and sub (i.e. 11 feet for mains and 4 feet for sub does not work, you can only set the sub at 5 feet or greater). I would also like to see Oppo ensure that bass managment is consistent across all formats for sub levels (both LFE and redirected bass) with the analog sub output. Otherwise, the picture quality is outstanding, audio is very good for a player at this price point, and the features, speed, menu/UI, and remote are all excellent - great job Oppo!

System:OPPO BDP-83, OPPO DV-981HD, PLAYSTATION3; ONKYO TX-SR876 7.1 A/V REC.; SAMSUNG HL67A750A1F LED/DLP FED TO THE POLK RM-7600 7.1 SPEAKER SYSTEM W/PSW 650. OPPO has done it again, they have successfully produced an affordable hybrid dvd player that is the "Gold-Standard" of performance and features. The competing products - certainly capable and also quite good performance wise - are trumped by the affordablilty of the OPPO unit. Blu-ray discs are amazing and the sound that the Blu-Ray disc has encoded is correctly recongnized creating a total enveloping movie experience. SD back up dvd's are upconverted to near Blu-ray levels - in fact, if the sound on the SD discs were a little better an arguement could be made as to the source material. Upconversion is better out of the BDP-83 than is from the DV-981HD which I consider the BEST SD-DVD player in the marketplace. The OPPO BD player edges out the Sony Playstation3 in both picture detail and sound - but credit given where credit is due - the PS3 is a good BD payer - but not in the league of the OPPO. As for the SACD and DVD-Audio, I have not had a chance to sit and do a critical listening test to make a judgement here, but even if there are some quirks as some of the other EAP reviews suggest, the OPPO didication to quality will "fix" the issue(s)through a firware update. The aesthetics and layout of the player and remote are well thought out and emit a sense of quality. Packaging of the BDP-83 is also top-shelf quality - far superior to competing products. So, the question as to whether or not the player should be released as a finale production unit - I vote a resounding yes! Thank you OPPO, your BD player is ready for Prime-Time !

I thought about this vote for several weeks now and I simply can't vote "Yes" at this time...at least not yet. The good news is that the bugs that are holding me back are relatively minor but they are preventing me from having a perfect listening event. The Good: 1-I've had no problems at all concerning movies...no sync issues, no missing audio tracks, etc. The picture quality is top-notch. I'm liking what I'm seeing as far as upconverted standard dvds go. I'm sure whatever imperfections I'm seeing are there to begin with so what can you do? 2-The sound quality is amazing. It surpasses both my AMC CD8b cd player & my Firestone Audio Fubar DAC. The Not So Good: 1-The worst offender is the repeating & endless playback of random cd tracks. This simply has to be addressed. 2-DVD-A doesn't support seamless playback so my copy of Beatles-Love is useless. I also cannot get to the menu anymore to choose an alternate audio track. 3-I cannot program a cd in a specific order. This is a pretty basic function that I would expect from a universal player and one that I find much more useful than shuffle. 4-After playing a DTS-CD all regular redbook cds will play back too fast until you power down & back up. 5-During SACD playback pressing the Pure Audio button not only restarts the track but also changes from 2-channel back to multi-channel. You then have to go back to 2-channel mode restarting the track yet again if 2-channel is what you're wanting. This may seem like nitpicking to many but these things are important to me. I am definitely keeping the player and overall I'm happy with it but it still needs another firmware update that will address these bugs. I have confidence that OPPO will get these kinks ironed out soon.

The player has performed well for me without incident. It's primary use as a Blu-Ray player has exceeded the three (3) players I used prior (Sony BDP-S1, Panasonic DMP-BD30 & Sony S-350). It has also played every SACD & DVD-A I've put in the tray. With the last firmware update everything is as stable or more than any of the prior players I've purchased. Future firmware updates will only make this player better. Oppo has another winner on its hands. Thanks Oppo, good luck with the official product launch.

My yes vote is based on: 1) after some moderate use with BD, DVD, HDCD, CD and SACD, I only had one lip synch problem with a BD that was corrected by stoping playback and restarting (So far, I have not had any problems using the newest firmware); and, 2) I expect that Oppo will continue to provide new firmware to address the remaining bugs. Its a great product that is ready for general release. Thanks Oppo!

I have nothing but good things to say about this player especially after the most recent firmware upgrade, which I beautifully installed over the Internet. This by all means is a universal player. For example, this player allows me to play my SACDs using DSD over HDMI (wow!), but also offers PCM over HDMI for folks with receivers/amps that don't support DSD. In terms of Blu-Ray, first of all, lightening fast, whether it's powering up, or reading the disc. Or, even firmware upgrades super fast. I have not had any problems with any of my over 100 Blu-Ray discs. They all played fine regardless whether the source was profile 1.0, 1.1, or 2.0, it all worked fine. In terms of playing back regular DVDs I have used the 1080p/24 conversion and it showed amazing reults. I don't know of any other players that even offer such a function. Also, my PAL DVDs play just fine on my NTSC Plasma (bear in mind though this player cannot be made regioncode-free, at least not that I know of). My vote is a strong "YES" to release this product to the public. Update 05/15/2009: Absolutely fascinating to see how fast this player is updating the firmware itself over the Internet.

This is the 2nd vote replacing my former one. I am now satisfy with the BDP-83, as my basic needs are achieved. This universal player is ready to the market for buyer, like me, who need 1 player to play Blue Ray, SACD and DVD-A with internal lossless and core sound track decoding to processor or receiver with only 1 set of analog ins. The performance on blue ray is superior in Video and Audio. SD DVD up conversion is at least on par to other blue ray players. SACD and DVD-A is just icy sugar on the cake and I do not care much even the performance is not as good as a dedicated music disc player. I understand that OPPO is still trying hard to fix some of the issues on SACD and DVD-A. Hope the solutions will come out soon and post out the final firmware in the near future. OPPO has job well done on BDP-83 on present performance. Congratulations.

As a previous OPPO products owner I already know firsthand about their outstanding quality, value, features and customer support that are second to none. So I put off purchasing a Blu-ray player waiting instead for an OPPO to become available, well the BDP-83 was worth the wait. With incredible picture and sound quality, fast Blu-ray load time, excellent dvd up-conversion, SACD and DVD-A playback, two USB ports, a great illuminated remote with discrete codes, the included high quality HDMI cable, and automatic firmware update notifications with easy updates over the internet, what a feature set. The excellent owners manual and easy to navigate and understand menu system is well thought out and has so many useful settings that you can tweak your system to peak performance with the included benchmark disc. I have had some minor disc compatibility issues and some glitches but the latest firmware updates has resolved most of them to the point that the BDP-83 is now stable and ready for release. I wish the BDP-83 had the video capture feature of my DV-980H, I spoke to OPPO about this and they said there have been many request about adding this feature. I would like to thank everyone at OPPO for continuing to design quality products of high value and state of the art performance for all of us to enjoy and as always the great customer service.

With the new firmware installed, everything is working perfectly. Every Blu-Ray disc I've tried has performed flawlessly, BD live works as well, and I have experienced no loss of lip-synch when watching upscaled standard-definition DVDs. And a special thanks to Oppo tech support for turning me on to the MKV format so that I can play my MP4 files without transcoding. VOB plays perfectly as well.

Being a first time OPPO owner i dont know what to expect. All i know is that i have been reading and hearing rave review about its product. When i was invited to be in the 2nd eap, i was excited and happy to say the least. Having the player for almost a month now doing various test with the player and my current set up. All i can say is that the BDP-83 is ready for general public. Playing Bluray movies and SD DVD gave me an excellent feeling. I have tried SACD and DVD-AUDIO that i own and none of them gave me a problem. Sure i know that there are some minor hick ups that is associated with playing those music cd's and DVD. But with all the audio and video that i used and tested. I didnt experience any problem or what so ever that will make me to vote no. I am voting YES because i have not encountered one problem playing movies and audio cd's and dvd. Updating the firmware was a breeze being that the player is connected to my router. It took more or less 3 to 4 minutes tops to fully update the system. Also, the customer service is superb and reliable. Having a good player is good in my book but getting a wonderful and helpful tech support will always be an A in my book. Over all experience was great. And for that, i recommend base on my own experience and observation that this player is ready for public release.

While my abilities to test all of the BDP-83's features are limited, I was quite pleased with the unit as it came from the factory. I did, however, have a handshake/colorspace problem after installing the 18-0402 software update. This has been resolved with the latest 20-0417 update. To sum up, I'm very impressed with the performance of this little black box; even the packaging is first-rate. Exceptional job, Oppo.

Although some minor foibles still exist (notably in SD DVD lipsynch), I have been nothing but impressed by this player. It has overwhelmingly unseated my previous player (pio 51) and is ironically in a more stable state despite the other being out for nearly nine months. Blu ray performance is very good with great tweaking menus. SD DVD upconversion is without comparison. Well done Oppo and get this player out to a hungry public!!!

As a video player, this thing is spot-on perfect, as far as I can tell. But I'm experiencing faint (but distracting) popping sounds when I send DSD from multi-channel SACDs over HDMI to my receiver. And some HDCDs, as someone else has noted, lead to loud crackling and pops over HDMI. My hope is for the BDP-83 to be a universal player for all of my discs. Right now, it's not quite there. It's a great player, and I’d probably purchase it at the list price for the Blu-ray and DVD capability alone. But I think the SACD and HDCD bugs need to be worked out before wide-release.

If I could vote yes twice, I would. The 4/22 firmware update cleared ALL my issues. Come on EAP participants - just vote already! This is my first Blu-Ray player and my 2nd Oppo. It was a breeze to set up. So far it has performed flawlessly on any Blu-Ray or DVD I've played on it, even PAL Region 0 DVDs and DVD+/-Rs, and some disks that won't play on production versions of other players I own. Upconvert is better than my Oppo DV-981HD. Thank you to Oppo for the chance to participate in the EAP.

Although the latest firmware addressed some of my concerns I feel at least one more update is needed for general release. There are still issues with DVD-A and HDCDs that need to be fixed. There are also some specific DVDs and BDs that have issues but for the most part those formats are fine. With the latest firmware I have decided to change my vote to Yes. There are still issues with DVD-A but steady progress has been made. At this point I think I could live with the quirks remaining but am hopeful and confident that Oppo will continue to address the issues with updates.

Overall the BDP-83 is a great player. While I'm sure there are still some unresolved glitches and issues, for the majority of people who are looking to buy a BR player, even a universal one, will likely have a totally smooth experience. That coupled with Oppo's reputation for continuously working on firmwares after a players release make me feel it is ready.

I vote No because HDCD decoding does not work the way it should. After two FW releases that fixed all the problems I encountered in BD and SDVD playback, this player is very close to perfect, and is a keeper in all categories as a top BD player. I simply believe when the player is released to the general public all advertized features should work. Certainly, if you are not going to play CD's on this machine please ignore my No vote.

I have been playing with the BDP-83 for over 10 days now. I have played 15 blu-ray disks, dozens of standard DVD disks, the Roxy music SACD CD and misl. media files from a USB drive. So far the BDP-83 has performed absolutely perfect for me. Not one single problem. The blu-ray movies look incredible, standard DVD's look as good as my Comcast HD channels and my A/V reciever has never sounded so good. OPPO has a real gem here.

With the release of the 20-0417 firmware, I feel the BDP-83 is finally ready for release. I have tested my unit with CDs, BDs, HDCDs, SACDs, CD-Rs, DVD-Rs, and DVD-As. Prior to the last firmware updates, I experienced random CD track repeats and visual artifacts during DVD-A playback. With the 20-417 firmware, these problems appear to be fixed. I used the 5.1 analog outputs on the back of the unit and never experienced any audio/video sync problems. My remaining complaints are relatively small. Movie file support: The player supports only 3 container formats (MKV, AVI, MPG). There is no MPEG-4 support, and no way to produce MKV files with open source or QuickTime-based tools. Universal Remote Support: The key codes for the Red Green Yellow and Blue keys do not appear to be loaded into the Logitech Harmony Remote database. Zoom: My 42" plasma TV works best with the Underscan zoom level; a default setting would be nice. Documentation: The user manual needs some clarifications. The supported movie file formats needs to be mentioned. The description of the Audio key on the remote is rather vague ("Change audio language or channel") when the key is primarily used to change between stereo and multi-channel playback. The SAP and PIP mark setup settings mention "avoid distraction during normal movie playing" when turned off; OPPO support says "try enabling them to get PIP and SAP special features for certain BDs". Improved firmware update support: while I appreciate the need to "reset to factory defaults" after a firmware update, it is a pain and would be useful to avoid.

This is my first Blu-ray player & 2nd OPPO player. I was very pleased with the packaging. The supplied HDMI cable is of good quality. I was even more surprised to find a calibration disc included. The "build" of the player seems to be very good; appears to be "sturdy" -- carries some "weight". Set-up was very easy and liked both the "easy" initial set-up mode and the more detailed set-up option for later. Here are my performance comments: CD: through the coax digital output, very nice sound, very similar sound to my Adcom CD player. Upconverting DVD: through supplied HDMI cable to a 50" plasma 720p display -- improvement over my previous oppo upconverting DVD player. Blu-Ray: Disc loaded very quickly and looked incredibly well. No problems noted watching the disc. AVCHD: Was able to play a DVD that contained AVHCD video on both the 8cm & 5 1/4" discs with no trouble. Both discs loaded quickly and video looked great.

I only tested the unit with DVD and Blu-ray discs (no CD or HDCD) so my vote is limited only to what I tested. I experienced two minor issues: (1) online download of the first firmware update failed. I worked around it by storing it in a USB drive and running the update from the flash memory. The second firmware updated downloaded directly to the unit without any problems (2) On my first day I did not have an optical digital cable and I connected to the receiver via analog RCA connectors. The center speaker did not work. The problem was resolved with the optical cable. While these two issues would not disqualify the unit from going mainstream. I believe the first problem was resolved with the new firmware. And if the second has not been resolved yet, I would argue that whoever wants to use a Blu-ray player connected to a receiver via RCA connectors, then, well, go and get an Insignia player from Wal-Mart. No need to even purchase a quality player like the Oppo.

I do have one issue regarding CD playback - I'm not sure the manner in which the BDP-83 rewinds and fast-forwards through a disc is optimum... Not being able to rewind through previous songs ( and the lack of being able to tell where you are in a song while rewinding or forwarding ) is not the norm (at least through CD and DVD players-not sure about other Blu-ray players) It was a surprise to me, and according to Oppo, the player is working as intended... possibly just a problem with my player since all rewind and fast forward speeds seem the same to me.. However, everything else about this player so far has been nearly flawless, so it's still a yes vote from me

My unit has issues with audio cd's (redbook). It will randomly repeat songs for no reason and it may only do this once or may repeat the same song over and over (I was stopped it after 15 times playing the same song). Some SACD's sound slightly compressed when compared to my Philips unit. So far BLU-RAY is fine as is the decoding of the High Resolution Audio on them, but I am a little let down by the up conversion of standarad DVD's; always a hallmark of OPPO players. I think it needs just a little more work, either that or my unit is deffective. DSA

I have had the player now for about 1½ weeks. It is well built and has generally performed very well. Most of the issues I had have been resolved with the April 6th firmware update. Notably, the recent firmware update has improved DVD-A playback and seems to have somewhat improved the sluggish remote control response. It also corrected some skipping and audio dropouts on burned CDs and HDMI handshake issues. I have the player set up to output LPCM over HDMI to my pre/pro and so far, with one exception, all CDs, HDCD, DVDs, Blu-ray, SACD and DVD-A discs that I have played, now play fine. The only remaining issue I have identified is that the DTS 5.1 audio track on a Porcupine Tree DVD-A only plays back in stereo. The DVD-A track plays fine though. As DVD-A playback is still in a preliminary state and I believe that Oppo is aware of the DTS 5.1 issue, I’m sure that this will be corrected in a future firmware update. Video output on both Blu-ray and SD DVDs is excellent. I have used both internal scaling and source direct to my pre/pro (Anthem AVM50). Internal decoding of lossless formats works well and is definitely a noticeable improvement compared to the lossy formats on SD DVDs. As with many Blu-ray players, there will be future firmware upgrades to address remaining issues. In my opinion, however, the remaining issues are minor (exclusive of additional DVD-A refinement) and this player is at 95%. In my system, this unit now performs very well. I commend Oppo on taking their time to produce a fine piece of equipment and it is certainly now at a sufficient state that I can recommend a general release. I wouldn’t have said that before the recent firmware release.

THIRD ENTRY;I have installed the latest update of 4/22 /09 and tried a few of each format of audio disc and one bluray. Results are perfect. I have now changed my vote to yes and am very very happy with my player but would encourage OPPO service to keep up the excellent work in responding and issuing timely updates.Great product. SECOND ENTRY;Have installed the 4/6 update and can now play DVD-Audio.Still experience some issues including CD and HDCD so not yet ready to change my vote. The average purchaser at launch should have no functional issues on well established formats.FIRST ENTRY My no vote is based on non functional DVD Audio, some drop outs on sacd, and concern regarding lip sync. I believe it would be a major "opportunity lost" for OPPO to launch before fixing the remaining bugs including DVD-A using player in bitstream output. The player is close to being great, if fixed at launch, and should be universal.I have at least 3 friends waiting for such a product to replace a ps3+other player with one good universal box. Denon's high end universal model is just way too expensive but others will follow so OPPO needs to get in very soon but not until the BDP-83 does the brand full justice. I anticipate OPPO will do the right thing and will have a great player which will deserve all the great cred it will get. I have only used the product with HDMI connection to an Integra processor. Therefore I cannot comment on it's analog audio performance. But I have tried the player's video processing vs Silicone Optix Reon in the processor and both seem about the same on the basis of a subjective judgement over only a few movies. That means very good.

Aside from a few minor DVD-A issues it had—most of those have been resolved with the latest firmware upgrade—I thought the BDP-83 was very close to being ready for prime time. Now with the firmware updates, it is. It’s played every DVD, CD, and SACD I’ve thrown at it, and has done so with aplomb. It loads more quickly than any Blu-Ray player in my experience, and its sonic and visual performance for a $499 player is nothing short of stunning. I’ve thrown it against several players costing MANY multiples of its asking price, and it’s come up smiling in each case. Its reproduction of John Carpenter’s “The Thing” Blu-Ray was revelatory. I’ve never seen that movie look and sound so good, even when I played it through more expensive players. If Oppo can hold the price under $800, the BDP-83 is going be a stone-cold killer. Even if they can’t, it’ll still stand proudly among much more expensive units. It’s that good.

The April 21st Firmware release has made my BDP-83 ready for public release. I currently am experiencing no DVD Audio issues, I have not seen or heard any issues with my SACDs, Blurays or DVDs. I have not tested Dual Discs or HDCDs and I understand there are a couple as yet unaddressed issues with them as well. However, based on the amount of fixes in the April 21st Firmware release, I believe that the BDP-83 is now ready for public release. If there is another firmware release, it seems that it will cover most if not all of the total known issues. In the mean time, for a large percentage of potential BDP-83 customers the product is ready for Prime Time and is realisticly just a couple of firmware releases away from being close to perfect for every potential Universal Disc Player prospect in the market today. OPPO is on the cusp of releasing the most advanced multi-format universal BD player on the market and at a price point that no one in the audio industry can touch.

When playing HDCD CD's there are compatibility issues with the BDP-83 HDMI output to my Denon AVR 3808 receiver. I have discovered some issues with standard CD's that need to be corrected. For example: Sheryl Crow-Tuesday Night Music Club, and Stevie Nicks-Rock a Little will cause a high vibration to occur as if something is spinning unbalanced. I have not had these issues with my PS3. I will keep testing and change my vote as issues are corrected.

The player is by far the most refined Blu-ray to hit the market. Fast power on, load, and play really set this player apart. I also like the fact that I don't have to buy an SD-card just to use any sort of BD-Live features thanks to built in memory. As far as playback, the picture is beautiful and sound is great. I have yet to try SACD, but I REALLY hope Oppo adds DVD-Audio to make this the ultimate player to cover all the bases - with that, there would be no equal on the market!

Latest firmware fixed all my issues with DVD-Audio and Blu-ray has been fine since day one. Only issue I still have is a vibration problem on a single DVD-Audio disk. Thought the subwoofer had a grounding problem until I tracked it down to the player. I assume the disk is unbalanced.

Products used with BDP-83: Samsung LN52A750 52" LCD Thus far I have owned the Oppo 981 DVD player and have been overjoyed out of the performance with it's upconversion to 1080I and let my tv's better quality video deinterlacer do the rest for my dvd collection. Since the purchase of the BDP-83, I can understand the differences between the ABT VRS processing and the 971's chip. Far better picture quality with no artifacts or jaggies. I have left off all 120 refresh rates on the TV to assure original depth and motion of the dvd's. It is definitely the finest dvd reproduction I have ever seen, and would expect the same from the 983 universal player. I have not yet used Blu-ray in this player, but expect to once prices go down and will change to that format for future usage. Audio cd's in the BDP-83 are definitely the cleanest I have heard of any cd player used so far including the dvd-981 series. Unless you are playing compressed music on cd's, you will hear parts of the original like never before. I have yet to use SACD's. By far, you can't beat the purchase price of the BDP-83. ANything close will be in the $1000 plus range and still benchmark the same score as oppo's players. Also, there is nothing else that plays these formats and includes SACD capability. Therefor, I would take this over reference blu ray players by denon, marantz,or yamaha.

The i% quirks this player exhibits should not prevent its release. The firmware is mature enough that 99% of the public will never have issues. One final firmware tighting up to fix the minor isses that exist and I think its good to go. Certainly the hardware is first rate and the best in class as far as I am concerned. Way to go OPPO you have a winner ready to come out.

I have been using the player for a month now. I've had no problems with the Blu-ray, DVD, CD and SACD discs that I have played. The menus are great. The player is quick and responsive. The drive is a little noisy when initially reading a disc, but quiet while playing. It is great looking and built very well. The remote is very nice. Oppo has been very good about updating the firmware regularly. I feel that for the most part the player is ready for prime time. I am confident that Oppo will address any current and future problems. I believe that customers for their products are not the average electronics consumer. That they are willing and completely capable of installing firmware updates as they become available. So no, it does not have to be perfect for general release. Complicated electronics like this are always a work in progress and never really completely done.

Update. UNIVERSAL PLAYER. That's what it was really all about anyway, wasn't it? Us Oppo fans wanted the BDP-83 to be the first successful market-release of a top-notch "universal" Blu-ray player. We knew Oppo would have all other bases covered very well, including SACD, but then it all hinged on the compatibility of this latest "universal" Oppo with a currently almost defunct format, namely, the DVD-A. I, not possessing any DVD-As up until recently, never had much utility for such in a player, BUT I STILL WANTED IT !? And, in anticipation of the advent of such a player (BDP-83 EAP-2 participant or not) acquired several DVD-As of my own. April 21, 2009: Now, after being satisfied with my latest phase of testing, I can AGAIN definitively vote an enthusiatic "YES". THE BDP-83 DOES WHAT OPPO HAS SET OUT FOR IT TO DO, everything I want it to do, and now does it very well. Tonight, I re-tested "the Beatles "LOVE"" DVD-A, as well as several others, and they all played flawlessly and with wonderful euphony. Unfortunately, the player still has some glitches for those with HDCD-decoding processors that get a digital audiostream from the Oppo, but my bet is that Oppo will have those issues mended soon enough. And, although the player will continue to be refined with additional new firmware releases, IMO, THERE ARE NO FURTHER REASONS TO DELAY THE COMMERCIAL RELEASE OF THIS PLAYER ANY LONGER. You're all in for a treat !!! I suspect the BDP-83 will be the most capable universal Blu-ray player for quite some time to come, bar none. So - YES, YES, & YES !!!

The OPPO 83 has been in my system for 10 days and I have encountered no problems with Blu-Ray or regular CDs. Interest in audio for this installation includes SACD, HDCD and CD. I chose not to buy DVD-A but have many SACD discs. The OPPO seems to produce a slightly superior BD image and up-converted DVDs are at least as good as other more expensive players I have used. The OPPO seems to be an excellent well thought out product and will be even better with a few firmware fixes for identified situations. Fan attach needs to be more secure and would like auto power down feature.

Connections are (BDP-83) --> (Marantz SR8100) --> (Samsung LN52A630) with HDMI all the way. I used Easy Setup with HDMI, 1080p, 16:9 Wide/Auto, Compatible. As I intend to use the 83 for video only, I tested only SD and Blu-ray DVDs. (I realize that many of the reported problems have been with audio discs, of which I have none.) I found no problems with the DVDs I tested, and video performance was outstanding for both SD and Blu-ray. I did encounter a lock-up of the 83 when attempting to read media files from an improperly-formatted USB thumb drive. The manual warns of this, and power cycling is the only solution. After properly formatting the thumb drive, media files played as described in the manual. I recommend that OPPO have the unit display an error, rather than locking up, when an improperly-formatted USB device is connected.

This is my first BD player I was waiting for Oppo to release one and here it is. What a great player after reading all the problems other BD players had I was happy I waited for this. I have the 83 hooked up with analog inputs to an older Yamaha A/V Receiver (RX-V1500) and HDMI directly to a 720p Rear projection LCD. My equipment is a little old and doesn’t take full advantage of the capabilities of the 83 but am excited for when I do upgrade to a 1080p display I will be all set. The analog outputs are a wonderful feature since I can enjoy the new audio formats (DTS-HDMA and Dolby True HD) from my older receiver. I’ve tested some BD’s both owned and rented, SD’s, DVD-A, SACD, HDCD, CD, and pictures and AVI files from a thumb drive. Since the latest FW Everything has played well. The FW upgrade was a seamless process over the Ethernet connection which I have connected to a Game Adapter bridge on my Wireless network. I have used the BD Live feature on the few BD disks that I have tried without any major issues, Oppo has to be one of the best companies I have ever had dealings with and I am in purchasing so I deal with a lot of different Vendors. Great Job Oppo keep it up! This will be the best universal player out there. It would be nice to see one more firmware released before these are available but the latest firmware works just fine for my uses.

My vote is based on my specific need. I want the best possible Blu-ray and DVD player I can get, and the BDP-83 satisfies that need very nicely. This is my first Blu-ray player, so my only comparisons are with what I've read, but the picture and sound are fantastic on an 85" screen. Operating speed seems to be on a par with DVD players I've owned, which is much better than most other players I've read about. DVD playback is also excellent. Images are crisp and smooth, with an absolute minimum of artifacts. I haven't done a head-to-head comparison with my OPPO DV-980H, but the SD picture is definitely better than the already good picture from that player. I haven't had any lip-synch problems with DVDs, although I haven't tried any of the discs reported to have problems. Bottom line - I'm keeping mine. I'm confidant that OPPO will continue to fix the remaining glitches. One would like a product to be perfect before it's released to the public, but with something this complex that doesn't seem to be possible. It's important to remember that you're not likely to see this player at a big box store any time soon, with massive returns because it won't play certain DVD-A or HDCD discs properly. I'm guessing that the majority of customers for the BDP-83, especially the high-end ones who are most interested in it as a universal player, have been glued to this web site and the AVS forum ever since rumors of an OPPO Blu-ray player surfaced. Thanks to OPPO's full disclosure way of handling the Beta and EAP programs, no one's going to get blindsided.

Every Blu-Ray disc I've tried has performed flawlessly, and I have experienced no lip-synch when watching upscaled SD-DVDs. Although, there are still minor issues to the performance of the BDP-83, with the new firmware (4/06/09 version) installed, everything is working at the high level expected of an OPPO product.    I love the BDP-83. Every Blu-ray disc that I have thrown at it has played perfectly with the exception of one 1080p special feature (The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008) where I encountered lip sync issue after pausing it. I hit rewind and then play and it was in sync again. I don't own many SACD's but the ones I do have played fine. The sound is great being bitstreamed to my Pioneer Elite AVR. My favorite part about the player is the fast load times. This is my first Oppo product and I can tell you right now it won't be my last.

After the latest firmware update, I feel the 83 is ready to be released to the general public. The build quality is excellent. The speed of the 83 on BD playback is impressive. I have tested about a dozen BD’s, and playback has been flawless. Upconversion of DVD is outstanding. I would give a slight edge to Oppo over my Toshiba XA2 and Samsung 2550 in terms of upconversion quality. I haven’t experienced any playback issues with DVD. I only have a small amount of SACD and DVD-A to test. All have played without issue. I know others have experienced some issues with DVD-A, and lip-synch, but fortunately I have not experienced any of them. Job well done Oppo!

This Blu-ray player lives up to and surpasses the quality standard established by Oppo with its other DVD players (of which I owned them all). I don’t see any reason not to make this product available to the general public.    Watched 4 BluRay's without any issues so far. Picture quality outstanding on my Pioneer 151FD Plasma. This is my 1st BluRay, so cannot compare vs others. The only disappointment is in the SD DVD upscaling. I have a Toshiba HD-XA2 HD DVD player and in 3 tests I've done (not scientific), the Toshiba performed noticeably better in low light scenes than the Oppo. With the Oppo, the darker scenes appear to have some very slight noise and fuzziness; definitely more so than the Toshiba. Could this be my particular unit? Others cite the SD DVD upcaling as a strong point. Overall, I still vote Yes at this point in time - will do more viewing and update comments if needed.

Issue remains with Blu-ray playback of DTS encoded discs. "Normal" 5.1 is spot on, but DTS encoding experiences what can best be described as distortion in the audio track resembling popping/thumping noises. Most prevalent at lower relative audio levels when the audio track is primarily speech. For me, this appeared to have gotten worse with the last firmware upgrade. As most of the discs I have recently purchased are in DTS format, this has become quite a nuisance.

In terms of video playback, this player provides the best performance of any optical disc player I have seen. Blu-rays and SD DVDs look fantastic on this player when viewed through a 1080p projector. CD performance is excellent, and SACD multichannel performance is very good. Playback of DVD-Audio-only discs still has some minor issues with a small number of releases (most notably the Talking Heads DualDiscs), but OPPO Digital is working through those issues and appears to have a firm handle on them. Buy this player if you love moving pictures on optical discs; you will not be disappointed.

With the April 21 FW update, the BDP-83 is ready for prime time. I had voted yes already but this release cleared up the small operational issues I'd seen. Great job, Oppo! I'm playing BDs, DVDs, CDs, SACDs and DVD-As without any issues and with excellent PQ & sound. This very well could be the best player quality at launch ever experienced. I think the Beta and EAP programs have proven successful. I hope you can keep up with the high demand you should expect for this product.

The bluray playing has been flawless. However, I'm experience slight popping noise while listening to SACD via DSD to my AVR. I'm also experiencing some rumbling from my sub during soft music at high volume. Switching to PCM fixes both problems. Switched vote to Yes. Rumbling is gone after the latest firmware update. Although the popping noise is still there, I hope it gets fixed prior to release. Otherwise, for the general public, this player is ready to go.

There seems to be no apparent reason for ANY hardware changes that need to made to this EAP Model. The Build Quality, Plethora of Features and Flexibility of Fine-Tuning make this player, IMO, "ready for Prime Time" NOW. Although not perfect (some lip-sync and DVD-A issues), Future Firmware updates and fabulous Customer Service should make the OPPO BDP-83 a truly great universal player with terrific value for years to come. One issue I found was with an MKV file -- the picture was great, but the people in the movie sounded like "Alvin and the Chipmunks" -- the File played correctly on my computer. Hope this gets fixed by a firmeware update.

Siginificant lipsynch issues plague dvd playback. Hopefully this will be resolved via firmware updates. I have voted based upon the subjective criteria of: Would i take it back to big box store or not. At this pt, the lipsynch issues on sd dvd (with 24fps off) have been outweighed gains in PQ and upscaling.

05/07: Phantom Center has been fixed with FW: BDP83-22-0430 released May 4th. Way to go Oppo. Vote is changed to "Yes"...for those who may have the same set up as myself. 04/26: Sorry folks. Still a "NO" today due to reasons posted below: 04/16: Oppo Digital is a class operation. I enjoy working with them to iron out the kinks in what I hope to be a solid addition to my system. They are making definite progress across the board. SACD and DVD-A are great perks. Even with those bugs, knowing they will be fixed, I’d vote “Yes” BUT one issue alone has me saying “No” for right now. I have no “Center Channel Speaker”. The BDP-83 is compatible but looses the Center Soundtrack via analog outs. There is a work-around that then creates lip-sync issues of which has a counter as well. I would like to just play the disc. Oppo is aware and has duplicated the effect. Progress on Oppo’s Engineering team will yield a “Yes” eventually.

After updating the player with the last firmware update I am switching my vote to yes. There are still some minor issues that I am positive Oppo will correct before they release the player (such as music CD tracks repeating, some standard DVDs freezing and other reported issues). Simply put, the BDP-83 is on track to being a REMARKABLE player that will play all of the media thrown at it. I am confident it will only get better as Oppo continues to refine it with firmware updates. Aside from adopter’s comments I'm pretty sure Oppo has established a company standard that must be attained before they would release this player to the general public. Great job Oppo!

After almpst a month I have had no issues. BR playback is top notch. DVD is just as good as the oppo 983 and xa2. I only have a few sacd and dvd-a, the ones I have play fine but there are still a couple bugs that others have reported. Load times are equal to the PS3 and updates take about 1 minute. Much faster than my Pioneer 51. Overall I would say it is a player ready for primetime. There are those that could have bugs depending on there system. My past player line up includes the S1,HD1,BD-30,95FD.51FD and now the 83. No other player even comes close to this one, and no other player was released without bugs either.

Well, I guess I’m the only unfortunate one -- my player died shortly after updating to 0417 (played one Redbook CD, tried to load an SACD but got a “NO DISC” indication, now it's constant, even after going back to 0402). On a positive note -- I was impressed with the 2CH audio sound quality (same DAC found in a few audio players in the $1-$2K range). Enjoy!

Very impressed with the build quality of this player and more importantly the video quality it produces. Blu-ray disks are simply stunning. The big surprise is the quality of up-conversion of sd-dvd which to my eyes was in the 80-90% range of Blu-ray. CDs were outstanding. Ability to display home photo albums from either a usb memory key or a cd or a dvd were quite a nice bonus. Job well done for a fair price.

It is very obvious that OPPO has done their homework. I have owned 4 different players and this is without a doubt the best I have used. Speeds are very fast, picture quality is as good as anything out there, and the remote is worlds beyound their first, included with the regular upconverting player. Downloaded firmware update via internet right to the player, wow! So far I haven't used it with SDAC or DVD-audio but by all accounts this one is a keeper.

With the latest firmware, my previous issues with audio/video sync using the analog outputs have been fixed. Also, the SACD pops and clicks when SACD Output is set to DSD have gone away. This player is now suitable for full-time use for Bluray, DVD and SACD in my system. (BDP-83 video via HDMI to Panasonic PT-AE2000U, audio via 5.1 analog output to a Classe SSP-75 pre/pro). I have not tested CD playback (I play CD audio through a Slimdevices Transporter) or DVD-Audio (I don't own any).

With the new firmware release on April 21, 2009 (created by Oppo on 4-17-2009), SACD "popping" sounds still occur using HDMI bitstream, SACD DSD, and SACD multichannel priority. Since SACD support is a formal part of the BDP-83 features, I feel it should be more reliable before release to the general public. I have confidence Oppo will eventually fix this issue. It's a great player--just needs more stability with SACDs.

I came to this site to vote "NO". After using this player extensively for the last week, I discovered many of the bugs, problems and missing features that others have reported. I have posted my findings in the AVS EAP thread. I feel that I have been reasonably active in discussions and testing. Most serious issues that need immediate resolution are: lip sync problems with DVD's; SACD clipping/navigation; and all audio problems related to both DVD and BD playback. I am voting "YES" because when I read the statement above the YES/NO vote buttons, I can honestly say that "for MY theater, the BDP-83 is suitable for daily use. I would not be disappointed, however, if you (Oppo) choose to not GR this player, until many of the critical problems are resolved. That said, I am fully aware of how this works and that this product needs to start generating revenue. In it's current state, the BDP-83 is more stable than any initially released BD player. DVD/SACD/DVD-A needs more refinement, however. I can live with that. Can others?

The BDP-83 is my first Oppo product and I am very impressed by the build quality, features, functionality and ease of setup and use. Since hearing about hi-def movies a few years ago, I had wanted a universal payer that played Blu-ray discs, and all my DVDs, DVD-Audio discs, SACDs and CDs. This is it! Awesome job - it works perfectly and with all of the mentioned formats.

While there may be a few minor bugs and features yet to be completed, this player is absolutely amazing. I have a pretty basic setup compared to many; BDP83 connected direct to Samsung FPT5884 via HDMI, both the coax and analog connected 7.1 to my old Denon 3802 – 7.1 PSB+Phase tech setup. I have had only two issues with the 83; a std CDA Chris Isaac CD that wants to repeat a couple of tracks – and then when manually advanced – advances subsequent tracks normally per the “normal” play config (plays perfect otherwise). Then, the Eagle Eye BD froze 5 times – audio and video for 1 – 2 sec... then continues normally – dirty/smudgy Block Buster disk was cleaned and then all played normally half way through until I stopped it. The PQ is incredible, the sound is awesome – I have none of the sync issues others complain of. Plays SDDVD and homespun/Photodex DVDs very well. The USB is great; play from the music play list and then browse to a pictures folder on the stick, plays the photos – slide show style, and continues to play the play list – simultaneously, perfectly. This is an awesome player that everyone should have. Features to add: Memory dump of config/setup to USB. Test tones for analog. Indication on front panel of audio / video output res & format. Let this thing loose for all to enjoy. Latest 4/21 FW, pwr cycle, reset defaults, pwr cycle etc.. still have repeating tracks... Still a great player

After installation of the 0417 firmware update one of my issues is gon and the other is less of an issue. So I am changing my vote to Yes. The random repeats of CD tracks has been fixed. The CD vibration problem has not been eliminated, but it is much less noticeable now. I am confident Oppo will work out the kinks relatively soon. I think the only question now is for Oppo: whether it thinks the remaining, pretty well documented problems will turn off the average person who buys Oppo players? I recognize that Oppo's customers are not the average buyer of home theater equipment who shops at Best Buy, or even specialty audio/video stores. But Oppo's customers are not all hobbyists who enjoy being part of a work i progress. That is a business decision I cannot answer. 4/15/09 -- I have thoroughly enjoyed using this player. I cannot compare it to other blu-ray players because I've never owned one before. But it is an improvement over my Pioneer Elite 59AVi in video and a great improvement in audio. I have no DVD-A disks and only a few SACDs and HDCDs. I have had no problem with SACD and HDCD disks. I am voting no now because there are two problems that need to be fixed, one big and the other small. My understanding is that both fixes are in the works. The big one is that some CDs cause a tremendous amount of vibration, and there appears to be no visible reason for this. For example, I have the 2 CD set of the Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall. When Disk 1 is played the vibration is so great it competes with my speakers. Disk 2 causes no problem at all. The small issue is that the most recent firmware introduced a random pattern of repeating, sometimes the last track repeats and sometimes the BDP-83 stops when it reaches the end of a CD. When these are fixed I'm ready to vote yes.

After having had the pleasure of having the best blu-ray player on the market before general release, I can honestly recommend this player to audiophiles/videophiles and others that are interested in mid- to high-end blu-ray players. This is an excellent player in all aspects that deserves many accolades it will soon receive. -------------------------------------- Original Vote Yes and comment below: A worthy product at a more complete stage that Bluray players 6 months out on the market. I trust Oppo will continue to address issues via firmware updates. In its current state, it is still a very good product.    All remaining issues that I had are fixed with the latest FW update (BDP83-20-0417.) No more TrueHD dropouts, and seamless DVD-A transitions, and vastly improved DVD-A navigation. I have not personally experienced any other reported issues, such as with HDCD, and CD track repeats and CD fast speed. So, for me, I can't find any justification for withholding this beautiful player from the increasingly impatient general public.

The player has been entirely stable in my system, where it serves primarily for Blu-ray and DVD playback. While I don't use it for audio duties, I have tried an number of CDs and SACDs out of interest and have not run into any of the issues others have described. It appears to be a fine product and I think it's ready for the broader market.

This thing is awesome and, in my opinion, ready for "prime time"! Blu-ray's with loss-less soundtracks are flawless. SACD's are incredible. My biggest surprise is the performance on DVD's. The upscaling does wonders for all the DVD's in my collection. It would be "cruel and unusual" to keep this unit from the general public. Any issues can be dealt with via firmware upgrades. I did the latest one the other evening in less than 10 minutes - logging on to the site to completion of the update on the machine. Can't beat that.....

As a Blu-Ray player, yes. As a DVD player, yes. As a SACD player, yes. As a DVD-Audio player, I don't care. The BDP-83 plays all my BD discs (as well as all rentals) flawlessly along with all my SD DVDs, and that includes the BBS Planet Earth set which another voter said they couldn't play. Lip sync has not been an issue on any BD or SD DVD. I have one SACD that won't play. Based upon my experience and much of what I have read, I am of the impression that many of the problems cited so far (other than DVD-Audio)are related to software and setup issues. Some processors/receivers feature a Lip Sync adjustment; that suggests to me a desire, on the part of some manufacturers, to accommodate variability in BD and SD discs. I don't have a need for OPPO to try to fix problems that come with poorly produced discs; maybe I'm lucky to not have such a disc in my collection nor in the discs I have rented. I turn it on, it plays what I put in it. The sound quality is far beyond anything that has been through my Rotel processor and the picture quality makes my Optima HD73 projector and 120" Carada screen come alive. I can't apply the "would I take it back to Costco" criteria because I knew going in that this was still a test of sorts and that OPPO will make it good under any reasonable circumstances. The fact is that, even if I applied the Costco criteria, I'd still keep it. This player as about as good a reason to retire my Rotel RSP-1066 processor in favor of a pre/pro with full HDMI (such as the new , yet to be released Emotiva UMC-1). Now I can start the waiting process all over again.

Everything works as advertised including DVD-A support. Would love to see the ability to read files from a server (DLNA) via ethernet -- the same files one can read via a USB stick -- but that is a feature request for the future. The other feature request for the future would be FLAC file capability. But it's ready for release now. Go for it!

I love this player. When I received the player in the mail, the packaging was excellent and made me feel like this was a top quality player. The hook ups and menus are very simple and easy to follow. I am a movie buff, and own about 800 DVD's. My dvds have NEVER looked or sounded better! Blu-ray playback is exceptional! I own a PS3 and this player beats it out hands down. My hats off to Oppo for a GREAT player. I look forward toward continuous improvements and future products from Oppo. I think the public and reviewers are going to love this player. Thank you for picking me to be one of your 300 beta testers! It was a pleasure.    Tested menus extensively, very well thought out and easy to navigate. Setup was easy to undertand. Quick startup for BluRay. BD Live on Ironman worked well. Changing settings while watching a movie or cd was playing worked well. Running HDMI to Onkyo Receiver, handshaking was perfect for me. No lipsysnc issues for me. Network setup just worked. 2 CH audio from anaolog outs was definitely better than the dacs in the HT receiver. Great 2 ch audio!! SACD worked well with DSD over HDMI. )Norah Jones and Diana Krall).Upconversion on Std DVD was very good. The only thing I did not test is DVD Audio, I dont have any. Tested decode of high end codecs vs bitstream to HT receiver, and heard no difference. This is a very well thought out design, and was easy to get up and running with so many vsriables for tweakers!! Slick packaging and a good informative manual, wonderful remote...the only minor negative comment is when booting up the system with DVDs you sometime see some odd vertical color stripes on the TV display, like multi-color vertical bar codes...they are only in a small area of the screen and only for a few seconds and then go away...I vote a solid YES to get this out the door. I will buy a dvd audio to play with as well.CONGRATULATIONS OPPO!!

The machine is worth releasing to the general public from my perspective. The picture quality and upconvert abilities are worth the price of admission. The sound quality is also excellent since OPPO resolved the vibration issue. Please note that my system uses the stereo outputs and therefore I can't speak to the receiver crowd.

Update 5/14/09 - I am changing my vote to 'Yes'. I have watched 4 more Blu-Rays, as well as a bunch of DVDs and a couple of SACDs. I even plugged in my Walkman MP3 player via USB and used the BDP-83 as a server. Sound quality is excellent - better than my Sony SACD player, and at least as good as my newer Denon 1940CI, which I frankly haven't spent much time with. This is easliy the best DVD player I've used, and you can begin to think that upconverted DVDs are good enough, until you stick in a Blu-Ray and get blown away by the deeper colors and denser detail. I can now sit 6 feet from my 60" Sony SXRD set and revel in the richness of a great movie, and forget that it's a video. The menu navigation problem I had on the Harry Potter movie was cured by a firmware update, although I saw the same problem again with 'I Am Legend'. I'm not concerned now, though, because the firmware update process is painless, and OPPO has shown dedication to fixing any identified problems immediately. The Blu-Ray format seems to be a bit unstable, and the only solution is updates, which OPPO is handling well. Previous Posting: So far my experience with DVD-videos and SACDs have been excellent. The video and sound quality of the OPPO has been slightly better than my Denon 1940CI, which up to know I have been completely delighted with. I think the picture quality in 1080i mode is about the same as my Toshiba HD-A2, which doesn't have a 1080P mode. However, my first try with a Blu-Ray, "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire", revealed problems with navigation in the pop-up menu for soundtrack, closed-captioning, scene selection and special features. The up, down and select buttons work, but the left and right navigation buttons act as forward and rewind buttons. I will try more Blu-Rays as my schedule permits, but since Blu-Ray playback is the main reason I want the OPPO, I think these issues need to be ironed out before it is released for purchase.

A nice player all around. I think the build to the menu system is a nice touch. I have been lucky to have had little to no problems. The problems that were reproducible was fixed in the 4/6 firmware update. I am not a heavy user and won't find as many issues as others, but for my use (mostly BD movies and some SD DVD, audio), it has been great. I think one final firmware update (fix last few issues with DVDA and some other sporatic issues that some are having) should make this player polished and up to Oppo's standards for release, giving them high marks they deserve. I don't have many complaints about it's current state. I will note that the navigation with the 83 remote is sluggish and sometimes not responsive, as many others have mentioned. I don't see this with my Harmony remote. Maybe a revision to the remote or adjust the delays in a future firmware.

I believe this EAP is a great way to share our experiences, especially on the AVS forum. Everyone has different interests and equipment. The public that are immediately interested in this unit by now pretty much know what it can and can't do. This is not a BM store bought product. OPPO customers generally research and know what they want. The wealth of EAP information going to OPPO to make firmware adjustments is invaluable. I strongly believe the hardware is ready and stable, and with a firmware or two it will be fine. I look up to a company that strives for perfection, listens to the customer, and continually wants to improve with firmware. I would like to see the people that signed up and have shown interest get first chance which I believe will be the case as stated. I say release it! I thank OPPO for this program.

This is my first blue ray player so I have not much to compare it to. I did once borrow a player for a few days and have to say that this one loads the blue rays A LOT faster. The image quality is very nice even for SD content. The upsampling of my old DVD's is pretty impressive and I like that it can revert some DVD's back to the 24hz speed it was originally encoded with. Blue Ray quality is amazing especially with the animated movies that I like so much. It would be nice to start some kind of forum to exchange settings for specific TV set's between users. I did find a loose screw ratteling arround inside the case when I received the unit. Luckily it turned out to be a screw from a cicruit board that was easily re-installed. Player was working fine though. I was dissapointed it cannot play avi files from a thumb drive since this is what my Nikon D90 records it's HD video files in. I guess I will have to convert all of them. Also dissapointed that the SACD output only works with HDMI and not through the COAX digital out. My DA converter does not support HDMI.

UPDATE (4/23) - WE HAVE A WINNER! I am now satisfied that this player is all it is claimed to be! Although not technically advertised as an Universal Player it has been billed as such. With the 4/21 firmware I am now a happy camper! From Oppo via email earlier today: "DVD-Audio is a work in progress, and we will be working diligently on new firmware releases to alleviate any current issues experienced with the BDP-83." MY VOTE IS NOW YES! The challenge: A "Yes" vote means that the features and stability of the BDP-83 player are suitable for my home theater. At this time they do not, however OPPO has advised that DVD-Audio, HDCD, and DTS-CD are a part of the BDP-83 as it is. What remains is basic fine tuning of these functions to remove compatibility issues. These are all "software" issues therefore they will be resolved with firmware. My unit has not had any issues with SACD, Blu-Ray or SD-DVD. I am confident Oppo will have my concerns as well as many others addressed in the next firmware, but as of today I would not release to the "public". I do understand most buyers will be beyond those who go to the big box stores & the like and will appreciate what the BDP-83 can do. It is better to iron out as many of these as possible prior to "public" release as I believe it is better to GET IT RIGHT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE THE FIRST TIME! To those waiting for the BDP-83......IT WILL BE WORTH THE WAIT!

Lip sync for SD DVD is way off. Moulin Rouge is terrible. Need to fix. All other aspects that I have tried have worked exceptionally well. Blu-Ray music video is fantastic. If the lip sync issue is not fixable then let me know so that I can adjust it. I've read that OPPO wants us to consider the the first experience of a new owner to insure it would be positive. If I bought this unit the first SD-DVD I would play is Moulin Rouge in DTS as I have done more than a dozen times. If I bought the unit today and played that DVD I would be heartily disappointed. I'm also disappointed that the feedback from OPPO has been to imply I am on the fringe and apparently my concerns are of little concern to them. My vote stays no. I hope for an early release of Moulin Rouge in BD. Otherwise the unit seems fine.

The latest firmware works great for me. I've not thrown a ton of stuff at it yet but it's operated flawlessly with the few discs I have tried. Judging by comments on AVS it's not yet 100% but it works for me and is 1000% suitable for my theater (and it certainly seems more worthy of release than some other players that - by all accounts - were released prematurely). All in all great Job Oppo. I hope you sell millions.

Well, I waited for the latest FW update (0417). There are no issues now preventing me from giving a resounding thumbs up - I did have lip sync and CD speed issues which are no longer a problem. This does everything I need it to do and it does it very well. BD's, SD upconversion, CD's, SACD's - all are top notch. Sound quality in particular is astounding! My PS3 has been relegated to game only duty and my Panny 35 is a backup bedroom player. I'm glad I have mine - now it's time for everyone else to be able to get theirs.

I feel after the latest firmware update (4/21) that most of the bugs and quirks in the BDP-83 have been addressed, at least the ones I have come across. There probably will be more, however with the incredible service level that OPPO provides I am confident that they will be taken care of immediately. Overall I think this is an incredible unit and is now ready to release to the general public!

Since the latest firmware, I am confident that the product is ready enough to be sold to the public and advertised with DVD-Audio support. I have not had an issue with any of my DVD-A's since the update.

After firmware update on the 22nd I powered off/on, reset to factory, powered off/on and tested and still got lip-sync errors with 1080p/24 SD DVD conversion on.... Last nite we had a power outage for about half an hour and for some strange reason when I tested today all is working fine.... (Dam gremlins, guess you have to starve them of power to get rid of them) Thank you Oppo, for letting me be a part of the EAP.

Sorry, I can't say yes when I am still having issues with CDs. No problems with Blu-Rays, DVDs, or SACD. I never thought I'd have to worry about CD issues but I guess I was wrong. Some songs stutter at the beginning and if the CD is a CD-R, there are issues where it will keep repeating the same song but yet the track shows that it advanced and when I go to advance the track it then plays the next song but displays the wrong track number. It's all very strange and should not be happening with any player on the market at this point.

Except for the incomplete DVD-A support, the player appears fully functional. The DVD-A support works well enough today that I'm quite confident Oppo can address the remaining issues with a firmware upgrade. Playback of both BluRay and DVD is excellent, setup was a snap and I've had no issues connected to a 3 year old 56" JVC display (HDMI v1.1). CD playback over the S/PIDF is really, really good. The analog section is good (really good at this price point), but not spectacular (I have a Meridian player/controller to compare against, so my standards are quite high). I'm quite happy with the unit and plan to replace 2 devices in my 'rack' with the Oppo.

Just updated the new firmware(4/6/09) for DVD-A and everything seems to be working smoothly. The only thing is you cannot fastforward nor fast reverse on the DVD-A without skipping somewhat(also the front panel readout does not work very well in these two modes until play has been pushed again). It also will not let you skip back to the previous song(DVD-A)...I know this is minor perhaps but it should be looked into...The unit otherwise has been flawless on Blu-ray and upconverting SD DVD's...It has been well worth the long wait....Continue to inform us(EAP Customers)of any new firmware upgrades ASAP...Thanks and Let the D-83 out of the chutes to the general public!!!!

Oppo just gets it right each time. This is my third Oppo player, and my first Blue Ray. I was holding out specifically for this player and I was not disappointed. The packaging, manuals, included HDMI cable, video calibration DVD, and the remote come together as a first rate product. The start time once a disc was loaded was exceptionally fast, much better than I had expected. Picture quality, even with standard DVD's upscaled to 1080p was outstanding. Most impressive was the fact I could attach either a USB thumb drive, or a data DVD with HD content, and be able to play it without any issue what so ever. This allowed me to take home HD video, burn it to a less expensive standard DVD and be able to enjoy it in my living room. The menu system for data discs and usb drives works very well. I tested the BD Live access and that worked without problem as well. Given the network connectivity of this device, it would be amazing if Oppo can add media server capabilities to this device. I highly recommend this to anyone in the market for a player that needs to do it all. Thanks Oppo!

My vote has changed. 1st feedback: Have had the unit in operation for 2 days. Very easy set-up. I only had one blu-ray disc (besides the test disc) which the BDP-83 handled flawlessly and with spectacular visual and audible results. Several glitches, however, have cropped up with regular DVD titles. Most disappointingly, none of the BBC series of Planet Earth discs will play-back. All of the 5 discs behaved similarly; the title would play with the hallmark soundtrack in the background, then the program material would try to initialize for about 2 seconds before the timer would return to zero only to start a futile endless loop. A couple of my children's DVDs also would not play, including Madagascar 2, and a recently purchased copy of Bolt has frozen twice. I was hoping that there would be less problems with our library of standard DVDs. From the comments recorded by the EAP-1 group, this doesn't seem to have been a common complaint. I hope that an easy solution might be available. 2nd feedback: A week later, I just installed firmware upgrade 18-0402 with immediate positive results. All SD-Planet Earth (BBC) discs played fully and previously glitchy children's DVDs are now running flawlessly. Sound is excellent and after adjusting settings using the Blu-ray test disc, even SD discs verge on being 3-D. This firmware seems street-ready. Thanks for the support.

I have given this unit a very thorough workout within the limits of my system. The short answer is I think it is ready to go as long as the DVD-A issue is resolved. Since this is a universal player I made every effort to test a wide variety of formats, but since my space here is limited I will keep this concise. Audio play back is outstanding! Multi-channel SACD and DVD-A recording were very impressive. Although some user have had problems, I played 10-12 different DVD-As and never ran into a glitch. My real surprise was how good the 2 channel audio was on both redbook and SACD playback. This is the kind of quality I would expect out of units costing 10x as much! Please note, I did test using both digital and analog outputs, but I found it far better to feed my Outlaw 990 the analog outputs for all forms of media. So for Audio I give it a strong A, not quite an A+ but for the price I don't think you can do better. Now onto video, again the short answer; the unit performed far better than I expected. I was outputting the video to a Mitsubishi 65" Diamond DLP. It produced absolutely wonderful PQ. Up-converting worked very well when I was using older SD-DVDs. I saw none of the lip sync issues that others reported. I wonder if that was related to using the digital out for the audio track as I only used the analog out as it was far better sounding. The load times for even the worst BD-DVDs was extremely fast, like no other system I seen so far. All the advanced BD features (the ones I used) seemed to function as described. Personally, most of them I don't find all that interesting. I did not try BD-Live, no internet in the HT. Video gets another A. The initial setup and the more advanced settings were very straight forward and easy to accomplish. The owner's manual needs to be updated of course, not a surprise. I have not done a firmware upgrade yet but it looks straight forward, so I am not concerned about it. Overall a grade A player, bring it on!

In the past few weeks I’ve played about 18 Blu-rays in this player and they’ve all played flawlessly. This is the first stand alone Blu-ray player that meets my picky (some would call anal) standards for both Blu-ray and DVD playback. I would not hesitate to recommend this player to family and friends. Oppo: The king of DVD players is now the king of Blu-ray disc players. Awesome job OPPO!

What an outstanding piece of equipment. Hefty and solid with a great interface. Standard DVD is equal to the DV-983H, and Blu-ray is outstanding as expected. I can't say enough about how FAST this puppy is. SACD is great, but redbook CD's have an occasional speed issue, though not enough to keep me from voting yes. I believe that most of the minor issues left to correct will be taken care of by the next couple of firmware releases. Oppo rules!

I'm going to vote for the release to the general public. I've played a handful of blu-rays and a few dvd's with no problems. I was a little disappointed with the load times. I have the Panasonic BD-30 and in comparison it's about the same. When I heard of load times comparable to the ps3 I thought "great", although I don't have one to really know! I just heard that the ps3 is the fastest out there. Don't get me wrong it's still fast. I've got the Yamaha RX-V-3800 and have had no issues with that combination either. I know there are some issues with the Z-11 model, I don't know about others. I have had no audio dropouts either or decoding issues. Audio cd playback is outstanding for the price class, not to mention all the other features/outputs, etc. I waited a long time for this, not to mention being fortunate to be an early adopter, so I'm very pleased with the performance so far, and the looks-build quality! Just updated today with the new firmware for dvd-a and it couldn't have been easier with the network cable. So far so good! Anybody familiar with blu-ray and the players I'm sure are aware of firmware updates, it comes with the territory. Sure Oppo can wait and finalize/tweak a few more things, but with each new blu-ray release, it seems some new compatibility issue arises. I'm sure Oppo will get it right with less flaws to the public then other companies. Look at there record/customer service, not to mention the mere fact of this EAP program. Here's to the general public!

UPDATE: Oppo swapped players and so far I have no dropped connections. DVD-A still doesn't work 100% but thats a known issue. Sonically (and musically), this player is very well endowed. That it plays SD DVD's and Blu-Ray discs very well makes it one awesome SACD player. I think it works as well as anything I could buy right now. A definite keeper. Deserves a YES vote again. UPDATE: Yes vote changed to No - I applied the new firmware and started playing DVD-A's and found that "Love" by the Beatles still has track problems. I found that my digital connection quit too right in the middle of playing discs. It did this when I first got it and I thought I had a bad HDMI cord but there is no way it just goes bad again in the middle of playing discs. Something is very wrong with this machine and its in no way ready for the world.

I have thrown everything at this player, Standard DVDs, Blu-ray, CDs, SACD, and DVD-A. With the exception of DVD-A, (I only have 3) I have found only two problems with my setup. Of the 3 DVD-As, 2 play one does not (The Who's "Tommy"). and my 1 DTS disc "The End of the Innocence" by Don Henley which has a speed up issue. In particular, no problems at all with Blu-ray, DVD, I have viewed so many older discs (I am a Hammer Studios horror fan) they played perfectly, even the much maligned Universal Series of "Brides of Dracula", "Curse of the Werewolf", many reported playback issues with this disc set due to shoddy manufacture of the discs. I have even thrown in "Horror Hotel" circa 1958 and "City of the Dead" same movie with extended scenes with no problems. I watched LOTR: Fellowship of the Rings last night (Extended Edition) with no lip sync issues. I don't know with others problems with lip sync issues on DVDs are, I have thrown new and very old DVDs and my player has not had a problem. DTS and DVD-A are icing on the cake for this player. I have gone through HD DVD (A1, XA2), Blu-ray (Panasonic BD10, BD30), Pioneer (51FD), let's not go into the many firmware upgrades with the 51FD, this player is stellar, it also doesn't hurt that this player is FAST. I have had this player only a week, I am satisfied. If something occurs with my player I am not happy about I know I can change my vote, but as this time this player is a GO.

HDCD digital output to processors that have HDCD decoding (Denon AVP in my case) still isn't working properly for many discs (the HDCD light flickers on the processor and the sound skips when the light flickers, rendering the CD unlistenable). Otherwise, this is a great player.

I am very happy with this player. My equipment setup is quite old. CRT 1080I screen and optical link as well as anolog links to Denon pre blueray receiver but everything works fine. Every SACD I have plays ok and even the 2 DVD audio disks play. On top of that Oppo is continuing to issue Firmware improvements. As long as Oppo keeps on top of customer complaints and keeps issuing fixes I am ready to give them the benefit of the doubt. So release it to the public Two issue which I would like to see improved. A test tone function in the analog audio setup section. Makes for a more reassuring setup And the manual should give more detailed explanations of the various options. A lot of the choices in setup were guesswork and could have been more extensively explained in the manual

My two most important requirements for the BDP-83 are: 1) have excellent Blu-ray picture quality while loading the discs quickly; 2) play DVDs with excellent picture quality so I don't need a separate DVD player to watch titles that may never be released on Blu-ray. I've played 21 Blu-rays, 20 DVDs, 1 SACD, 1 DVD-A, 1 MVI, 1 HDCD, and 17 CDs so far. Blu-ray looks fantastic, though I don't have another player with which to compare. The Baraka Blu-ray in particular has scenes of such excellent color accuracy and high resolution that it seems like my display (Mitsubishi WS-48515) is a window to the real world. The 83 also loads Blu-rays very quickly (I disabled BD-Live). The 83 exceeds my requirement 1) above. Every DVD I've watched has shown improvements over my previous player (a Pioneer DV-588A) in terms of deinterlacing and decoding performance. I feel the 83 is giving me the best picture quality I can expect from DVDs. The 83 meets my requirement 2). The 83 has high build quality, easy-to-use menus, and a great remote. I've also been pleased with the 83's audio quality, particularly with lossless soundtracks on Blu-ray, but my audio system is modest so I will leave audio evaluations to others. I have encountered several operational issues. All of these issues were either fixed by firmware updates or do not prevent the player from meeting my requirements.

Original unit was defective, but replacement works just fine watching several BR / DVD and CD's...don't own SACD or DVDA. Excellent customer service. I'm assuming my original issue was a hardware fluke and not due to the design. Only nit-pick is the remote response is a bit delayed, but nothing to warrant a negative vote. Very happy so far and would recommend to others.

My only issue/feedback is that while some options in the setup menu's effectively disable other options (i.e. pure direct), there is no indication given of that. I'd expect that when you set a mode like pure direct, the other options that no longer matter are grey'ed out.

Love the player, audio sounds like my beloved analog system I used in the past. TV is a Panasonic 3000-model projector. Use a harmony remote & works well. Disc navigation a little clunky at times, like sometimes have to use "Enter" to begin playback instead of "Play" button. Fast forward & rewind are also a little jumpy. Unit is certainly ready for public consumption.

This is a wonderful player that meets all my needs. Both SD and Blu Ray image are stunning! As a universal player, its analog outs are truly superior. The hi rez blu ray audio is absolutely gorgeous. Both SACD and DVD-A sound beautiful. Most surprisingly, the 2 channel stereo analog produces sound as good as my $2,000 receiver, and slightly edges it out on HDCD material, which my receiver can't decode. While some DVD-A will not currently play, many do and sound great. Assuming the next firmware cleans up these problems, I have no hesitation in supporting a release to the public. This product is the best bang for the buck in many a year. Kudos to OPPO for producing a high quality product at a very reasonable price!

My comments on the BDP-83: Blu-ray movie function: No issues, nice to have Profile 2.0 functionality, in comparison to my older Panasonic BD30 Profile 1.1 functionality. Blu-ray data disk function: Plays MPEG2 files. Very handy for me, as I edit HD video and consumer level Blu-ray authoring software is very underdeveloped. DVD-A: Does now work on the one disk I tried. SACD: Sounds wonderful. SDVD: This is very important to me as Blu-ray penetration into the type of movies I am interested in remains painfully incomplete. I compared the following two paths: 1. Panasonic DVD-S53 (primary claim to fame is that it will output 480i) -> Integra DTC 9.8 (Silicon Optix Reon Video Processing) -> JVC RS1 2. Oppo BPD-83 (1080p out) -> Integra->JVC RS1. The test disk was Moulin Rouge chapter 9 and 10 (the Integra was doing the audio decoding, so I had no lip-sync issues). I previously used these scenes to test the Picture Quality adjustments of the Reon Chip. The scene is well suited for such testing because it has a combination of a lot of skin tones, diverse background detail and vivid color. My judgment is that the path number 2 is clearly superior. Path 1 showed more posterization on the faces and less clear detail in the background. This upcoversion result makes me a believer.

Works very well without any significant issues. Very happy that it comes with SACD format support too (have quite a few). Default SACD output setting ought to be DSD rather than converting it from DSD into PCM (latest BIOS update does not permit DSD output, just PCM)

The only issue that had been holding back my yes vote was the loud physical vibration of my first unit with about 20% of all disks (CD,SD,BR) that I played. It turned out to be a defective unit. The new one OPPO sent to me has no evidence of vibration. (I retested the disks that had vibrated before). For my use it is ready to be released. I have limited DVD-A or SACD usage, although the media I have works well. It plays all other media formats (ie. .mkv, mpeg, .mp3, and PAL 0). It is exceptional on SD and BD (as well as the DVD-A and SACD I have played in it). I have no doubt that any remaining issues will be fixed in future firmware. In all aspects this is an excellent unit and easily replaces my 981HD and ps3 for SD and BD.

My real vote is "Yes" with an asterisk. Yes for Blu-ray, DVD, CD and SACD, asterisk for DVD-A. Overall operation, blu-ray quality, ease of operability, manual, remote are top notch. I do not have concerns with Blu-ray or DVD operations. But DVD-A still has some issues -- if you pause a DVD-A mid track and then restart, the disc stops playing about 1 minute 45 seconds later. I am sure OPPO will get this right in a future update, but persons buying this now should understand that despite the April 21 update, there still seems to be an issue.

UPDATE2: Installed 20-0417 firmware. Fewer DTS-HD dropouts. Only one DVD-Audio menu navigation problem. PQ remains excellent. UPDATE1: Experienced a number of audio dropouts when viewing Quantum of Solace w/DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 - somewhat annoying but hopefully cured in the next firmware release. ORIGINAL: My observations were done using HDMI connection to a Marantz 8002 receiver connected via HDMI to a Pioneer PDP-5010FD plasma display. Using the 18-0402 firmware, viewed and listened to Blu-Ray titles with Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio. Picture and audio quality were excellent. Experienced one instance of HDMI synchronization failure which resolved by deselecting and reselecting the input on the receiver. Upscaling of SDVD material is excellent. Very good results also when viewing material recorded on both single- and dual-layer DVD+R media. Listened to several of my favorite audio discs including CD, HDCD, SACD and DVD-Audio. All formats were recognized correctly by the receiver and audio quality compared favorably to my Marantz universal (sans Blu-Ray) player. Have not tested the analog audio outputs of the BDP-83. Have not stressed the fast-forward, reverse, next, previous, repeat … etc. operations but have experienced no difficulties under normal use. While not perfect, the unit is as stable as (and easier to setup than) other production grade components I have owned.

There are a few issues with the player, but they seem to be minor: Lip Sync on some DVD's and DVD-A still has a ways to go are my main concerns. (hooked up via Analog). I am confident they will be fixed quickly. BR has been flawless and upconversion SD DVD very good. 2 channel CD via dedicated outputs is exceptional for the price.

For all that this player does right, I think its worthy of releasing this player to the masses, that goes without saying their are a few peculiarities that this player does seem to exhibit: rewind and fast forward do not seem to function like other Oppo players and ofcourse DVD A playback has been much improved - there are still a few hiccups that still do exist. However with all of his being said, this player displays standard DVD likes not other, Blu-rays looks amazing, and the audio circuitry has been much improved over previous Oppo units.I think you would be hard pressed to find a more complete universal player with the product support that Oppo provides

A lot of thought and hard work went into the design of this player. In my opinion it is more than ready for prime time. It loads fast and is very easy to set up, has a great feature set and the best remote of any blu-ray player I have tried. The BDP-83 is well built and represents the best player that is out there. I am sure it will even get better with future features through firmware updates. I have a question for the few who voted no. How many other players did you compare it to. I have owned a PS3, Panasonic BD30, Samsung 1500 and Pioneer BD51. All of the above have had some issues. So far the Oppo is the best player that I have tried.

Overall I'm very happy with the BDP-83. I've seen steady improvements with each new firmware release and while I haven't tested every feature it does everything I've hoped. Honestly, I'm amazed at how well fairly low res .avi files look on a big screen. The only things I'd like to see are the ability to play files off a network share and to support USB-attached HDDs which I can't make work (USB flash drives play fine).

After the last FW update, that was so simple via a power line Ethernet adaptor, I did my best to find a problem with any of the outstanding issues reported on AVS, or in my own testing. As a Beta tester on other products, an attempt to break things is part of the process. My experience with the 83 has been interesting.A few problems have cropped up. As an owner of a 971 & a 983 I'm fully aware of how stable and reliable OPPO products are when released. And continued support is a given. Time to open this player up to the general public. Ready for prime time. A giant killer. Joe

I have been very pleased with this unit. All BD look superb, SD look better than on my 981 and the audio has exceeded my hopes. This unit, playing into a Kuro and with good speakers, is a delight to see and hear. Unfortunately I will be away from my player for 3 weeks and will not be able to exercise it further. As I have had no problems, I vote yes.

I am very pleased with the BDP-83. It has played every disc that I have used with no problems whatsoever. I am confident that OPPO will correct the DVD-Audio Bitstream glitch with the next firmware release but am happy using LPCM until then. I know this player will be a great success and with continuous support from OPPO as well as their frequent firmware updates I will be happy with this player for a long time to come. Congrats OPPO!!

I am very impressed with the video and audio quality of the Blu-ray, SACD, SD DVDs and DVD Audio. This player is beyond my expectations and I am quite satisfied so far with the performance of the Oppo. Update: After the last two firmware updates, all my DVD Audio discs play fine and the menus work well. I really have no problems at this time and I am very happy with this quality player.

The folks at Oppo have again come out with an excellent product. Contrary to the experience of some of the other folks, I did not have any issues with lip sync. Both BD and SD-DVD playback was excellent. Very good sound as well, both for stereo and 5.1 analog outs. The only issue I had was flicker on some settings, and it turned out to be a problem with the Monoprice switcher. I am voting yes because I think this is ready for primetime.

I initially had concerns about the ability of the player to handle DVD Audio. At this point I am very pleased with its DVD Audio performance. I was happy with the video and audio quality of the Blu-ray, SACD, and DVD performance from the beginning. Th BDP-83 player has exceeded all of my expectations. Most importantly it has an unmatched ability to output the optimal digital audio stream over its HDMI 1.3 output from any source available to me. I was won over when the choices in the initial setup menu allowed me to preselect a preference for 5.1 channel audio via HDMI.

I personally haven't had any problems with the unit, and think that it works great. I've used it for DVD, Blu-Ray and SACD playback, but I haven't as yet tried using the USB thumb drive playback functionality yet. I believe that the unit is ready for release

I am proud owner of BDP-83, and 981HD. BDP-83 has everything I am looking for and I couldn't be happier with its top notch performance. So far I have listened to 6 SACD's and watched couple of movies with DTSHD-MA 7.1. I can't wait to load the new firmware and listen to my DVDA collection.

My 13 day evaulation was based on BD (12), SDDVD (8), Redbook CD (5) and files (20) ie mpeg. No DVD-A nor SACD at this time. Connections via HDMI bitstream into an Onkyo 606. BD was flawless even with disks with which others found issues ie Prince Caspian. SDDVD played wonderfully. The excellent upconversion was worth the wait. Easy Setup Wizard is a breeze. And Setup Menu is intuitive. Advance video setup is a must to properly calibrate display. The numerous options were appreciated. I am not using the analog output but I suspect judging by OPPOs attention to detail that it also has an array of options/adjustments to meet most needs. However, I did discover several bugs. 1) mpeg (on a DVD-R disk) play back is not as robust as Win Media Player playing the same material. A/V sync was a problem as well as video stutter. Numerous Stop-Play actions were necessary to resume normal play back. 2) After the DVD-R disk was replaced with a Redbook CD, the audio was playing at ~1.5x normal speed (almost chipmunk-like). Ejecting the disk didn't help. Only a power cycle resolved the problem. Neither of these issues reduces my satisfaction with the 83. It's the best A/V purchase I've made.

I am very impressed with the quality of the player. Feature, functions, fit and finish are better than either of my two prior Blu-Ray players (Samsung BD-P1200 and Pioneer Elite Pioneer BDP-95FD) were when I purchased them.    I have now spent over a week with the new 402 update so I now feel confident in changing my vote from "No" to "Yes". The new 402 firmware was simple and easy to install but after it was complete I tried re-watching the BD Serenity and the player locked up and had to be forced off? I tried powering the player back up again and the movie played fine. Since then I have not had any other major problems. The BDP-83 still needs some fine tuning but stability is much improved and DVD-A is now a working feature. Well done OPPO :)

The OPPO BDP-83 is attractive and well built. It is very fast and has a very nice-looking and user friendly GUI. I bitstream to a Denon AVP pre-pro and do no audio processing in the OPPO. I have not tested analog outputs. I have also compared video processing on SD-DVDs in the OPPO versus the Denon. I see very little if any difference between the two which is to say that SD-DVD upconversion is excellent. BD disks with the new HD audio codecs look and sound incredible. I am extremely pleased with the OPPO in my system. I uploaded the new software and have checked all disk types. I have had no problems with CDs, DVD-As, or SACDS. I have not tested HDCD and don't care one way or the other about that for reasons explained below. I have not had vibration problems nor any other kind of problem. In a week's heavy use the unit behaved perfectly including the easy internet update. I think this player as it now stands is less quirky and buggy than most others on the market. I recommend that OPPO release the unit for 3 reasons: 1) it is 99% of the way there, 2) updating is easy and it works well, and 3) I trust OPPO to fix the few minor bugs that remain via the update feature (like HDCD playback). I believe that if OPPO is up front with buyers and tells them exactly what the limitations and known bugs are, and promises to fix them, people will accept that and buy the machine. I would remind everyone of how many other vendors put gear on the market that could not do DTS-HD or Dolby TruHD which was promised as an update "later." As I recall some of those never materialized... I would recommend the OPPO--I am pleased to have made it into the EAP-2. The 83 has an elegant silky smooth look and feel and an attractive GUI. The remote is useful if somewhat cluttered. It's a great package from a great company.

This player is ready for immediate release with the latest firmware installed; at least for the type of consumer who has similar expectations and playing habits as me. I have not had a single glitch with any SD-DVD, BD or CD I have thrown at it. I do not own HDCDs, DVD-As, or SACDs. Performance has been fantastic, so much so, that it is revealing artifacts in BD sources that I never knew were there before. Future FW releases that improve on the performance of the other disc types I don't own is icing on the cake, but for the large contingent of "regular folk" like me, this thing is rock solid in its current state. I will be telling all my friends and family to buy one.

I've enjoyed a variety of media on the BDP-83, including DVDs, Blu-rays, xvid media, mkv media, audio CDs, HDCDs, SACDs and DVD-Audio discs. The few issues I've experienced have been resolved by firmware updates, except one DVD-A disc (Neil Young's Harvest) - I consider that particular issue an outlier. This player is ready for the general public (in many ways it is more mature than other already-public devices from other manufacturers).

Not much I can add to the positive comments so far. DVDs play as well as my 983 (and better than my Denon 2930CI), Blu-rays are great. Only bump in the road for me was trying to play video files off some old jump drives I had lying around. They wouldn't play and I had email exchange with Oppo and the conclusion its probably that the 4 year old jump drives are probably the problem.

The new firmware brought some needed improvements. At this point, I think the player is ready for an initial release. Are there still features and functions that need improvement? Yes but the core functionality is ready. I suggest you include on the player web page a brief description of the most significant "evolving features" so potential buyers know in advance where the player might not yet be putting its best foot forward. This will reduce your Tech Support calls and redundant AVS or other on-line support chatter. Congrats on a great player and thank you for the opportunity to be part of the program. This will be highly recommended to anyone I talk with.

I am using this in a situation where its mainly 100% home theater. I listened to a couple cd's just to hear the quality and to make sure there were no issues. After a couple bugs in the beginning this player is everything I could ask for. Ive thrown a lot of different dvd's and blu-rays at it and haven't experienced any hiccups.    After installing the April 21 firmware and trying it out, I have reconsidered my original vote and now I am voting YES. The SD/BD performance has been flawless for me even before the latest firmware upgrade but the new firmware finally fixed most of the SACD related issues that I was concerned about and although there still is a couple of minor SACD-playback problems in non-core user scenarios (after switching to the non-default SACD layer if you try to enable the audio only mode the player automatically goes back to the default SACD layer, also there seems to be a problem with the playback progress indicator bar when the remaining track time display is selected), I believe that the overall quality of the product justifies releasing it.

See My Comments On The AVSforum - www.avsforum.com Blu-Ray Forum, Oppo EAP Program, post #7574 Briefly: This is a fine piece of gear which is acceptable to me to use now but I think the 'general public' would rather have it with the known'issues' corrected in a firmware upgrade. -G The comments above accompanied with a 'no' vote were submitted prior to the most recent firmware upgrade which, I think, seems to have corrected most of the major issues (lip sync, etc.). My preferences for quality features in a player (in descending order) are: SD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and enhanced general Audio; the BDP-83 fulfills all of these requirements for me and that is why I think that it's a great piece of gear! Even though I changed my vote to 'yes' there are still a small number of people that would like to see some features included/issues resolved before 'release to the general public.' These items have been frequently discussed on the AVS Forum. In any case, the release time is obviously an Oppo Digital marketing decision. I hope that most of the future reviews on the BDP-83 reflect the same satisfaction that the majority of the EAP'ers have expressed thus far; its performance certainly merits favorable comments. -GeorgeM on Cape Cod

After two weeks of use on about 15 or so blurays a couple of DVDs and two DVD-As plus a firmware update, I can say that the 83 gets my vote for release. I have not had a single problem playing any of my discs. My only problem was with the HDMI EDID handshake and this is likely due to my Gefen HDMI 1.2, 2x2 switcher. I contacted OPPO about my display being magenta and got a response from tech support within 12 hrs. The problem was that the 83 wasn't able to set the color space properly when configured to the Auto setting. When manually setting the color space, the display was correct. I have to complement OPPO on the quality of the player and not in the least the quality of the packaging. My impression of the audio output is limited to the standard coax output. My Prepro doesn't have a HDMI input yet so my experience is limited to the standard audio formats. With that caveat, I must say that the audio is very good and quite immersive. The quality is subjectively better than that from my Pany BD-10A. The DVD-A quality over the coax was OK. I'm not expecting much until I get HDMI. The video output from the 83 is spectacular. People have said that there is not much difference in bluray video quality between players but I can say that the bluray video from the 83 is like night and day from the Pany. I'm watching the video on a 120" screen projected from a Pany AE-1000 and I have to say that the quality of the 83's video output is what I had hoped my projector would be able to achieve. I also must compliment OPPO on the ease of firmware updating. While others are still reporting problems, I am going to vote from my experiences and vote "yes". I would recommend that OPPO have at least one more firmware release prior to general distribution but from my experiences and the fact that the firmware updates are as painless as they are, I have to vote yes.

Just received my player yesterday & have been testing since. Extremely happy with it. I've had the Samsung BDP-1000, 1200, 1400 as well as a Sony BDP-S350 (briefly had a BDP-S300) & a PS3 to compare to. This player is definitely on another level than all of them. Had a couple of minor hiccups (tried playing a AVCHD on a BD9 & got audio but no picture until I ejected the disc then restarted it. Also, wouldn't play a DVD-R w/several .avi files. Read it as "No Disc" until I ejected it & then tried again. Played flawlessly after that) Other than those minor issues that were easily fixed, it's been perfect. The Oppo has played several BD-Rs that I burned but didn't "finalize" the disc. Only the Samsung BDP-1000, 1200 & my PS3 would play those prior to the Oppo. Haven't had a single drop out while bit-streaming DTS-HD MA or TrueHD either. Will purchase another unit (possibly 2) when I move to my new home. Will highly recommend this player to anyone looking for a Blu-ray player.

As I see it this player is ready for the general public. Especially since the general public that is interested in this player is a little more savvy than the public interested in a BR player at Wal-Mart. Is the player perfect? No. But, it is the best standalone BR player out right now. It is the best Standard DVD player out there now as far as upcaling. (I don't care about region free). These are the two features i care about. Yes, the DVD-A section still has hiccups. Yes, their appears to be some lip sync issues with DTS on Standard DVDs. This is OPPO we are talking about, though, and you know they will get these fixed. Sooner, rather than later. 'Nuff said. I say release the hounds!!!

I am changing my vote after updating the firmware. The new firmware solved the problem I was having with SACD. I noticed that there are a few additional functions with the new firmware such as lip sync but maybe I wasn't aware with its presence in the earlier firmware. Anyway this make the BPD-83 ready for its public release. There might be a few small glitches that I am not aware of, but many high-end products have some kinds of glitches of their own and this shouldn't delay the release of 83. Here is my opinion based on the earlier firmware: This is an excellent universal player in progress. Its video capability is exactly what I expected. Blu-ray playback is as good as a DVDO VP50 doing all the processing. I compared different combinations; 1) BDP-83, 2) Sony S550 to VP50, 3) BDP-83 to VP50. The images on a 100 inch screen looked identical in all combinations. Of note, the Sony S550 by itself is not as good. I was using the Denon DVD2900 for SD-DVD with the DVDO VP50 doing deinteracing and upconversion. The BDP-83 does a better job in delivering SD-DVD playback than the Denon. I did not experience any problem with SD-DVD. The BDP-83 plays every DVD I throw at it, including DVD backups. Decoding of various HD audio was great. It is a step better than Sony S550. HD audio was more dynamic out of BDP-83. My reservation is its ability as a universal player. I only tested about 10 SACDs but I had one SACD not read by the BDP-83. In my opinion, one out of 10 is too many for a product released to the public. I can't comment on its capability on DVD-A since I have one DVD-A, which the BDP-83 played flawlessly.

BluRay playback is outstanding. No issues. DVD playback is excellent. No issues. SACD playback is very good. No Issues. CD playback (including HDCD)is very good. I use the analog stereo rca's for CD's- HDMI for everything else. The upgrade process was fast and trouble-free using an ethernet cable temporarily hooked to my modem. I am not, nor do I want to be hooked to the internet all the time. DVD-A playback is inconsistent. Eagle's 'Hotel Califonia' plays fine. Beatle's 'Love' has unsmooth transition from track to track. 'Love' CD works fine. Queen 'A Night at the Opera' has audio dropouts for a few seconds sporadically throughout. These DVD-A glitches need to be fixed before this otherwise excellent player is released to the public. I have faith that OPPO will correct these problems. I am anxiously awaiting the next firware upgrade. I really, really want to vote yes. 4/21/09 I updated firmware and the Queen 'NATO' and Beatles 'Love' DVD-A both play well. I am changing my vote to yes. Good work Oppo! As far as I'm concerned it is more than ready for release to the general public.

After updating the player with the BDP83-20-0417 firmware, the one issue I had with this player has been resolved. Other than that, the BDP-83 has been a stellar performer. Even for people like me with an HDMI 1.3-capable system, this player could represent the pinnacle of performance for Blu-ray players currently on the market. The feature set currently implemented in the player is incredible for the price, and as a prior Oppo customer, I am confident that they will continue to provide stellar support for this player. Strongly recommended anyone considering the BDP-83 to purchase it when made available.

I am giving this player a conditional yes vote. The basic Blu-ray, SACD, and DVD functionality is excellent.    The product is outstanding considering the value, as it has no peer at the price. I did not encounter any issues, however was not able to fully test as part of a home theater system. The competitive advantage here is the excellent picture quality (esp. DVD), easy/amount of adjustments along with lightening fast operational speed. Highly recommended.

At this point in time my vote is a RESOUNDING yes! In my home theater setup I have not had many issues at all. Outside of a few DVD-A issues in the beginning and the cd loop that seems to have been corrected after the last firmware update. I'm using the Oppo for all codec decoding and sending it via analog outputs to my Arcam receiver. The sound is beautiful, and the CD sound using my receivers source direct is breathtaking. The only thing I've noticed is that the midrange seems a little thin... I've been tweaking my subwoofer and still playing with this a bit, but the 2 channel has such depth and detail... I've just never had a piece that could produce that kind of sound using a CD. Brilliant! The picture quality is also nothing short of fantastic on my beast of a CRT (Pioneer Pro-530). I'll keep testing and if any issues develop I'll keep reporting them. As it is, Oppo support has been incredible and they truly know what customer support is supposed to be. Great Job Oppo building a fantastic piece for such a reasonable price! Two thumbs up, WAY UP!

This is my first OPPO player and I was impressed from the moment I opened the package. The packaging, manuals, included HDMI cable, video calibration DVD, and the remote make for a first rate product. Load speed and navigation is excellent (significantly faster than my Elite BDP-95FD) even with BD-Live disks and although I probably won't use BD-Live often that worked without any problems. Menu navigation is easy and setup was a breeze. Tried several Blue-Ray disks (such as Ratatouille, Quantum of Solace, Dark Night, Planet Earth, Fifth Element, Master and Commander and others) and all played without problems and standard DVD's plus movies I created on a computer played without problems as well. HDMI PCM into the Meridian HD621 into the Meridian G68 for SACD sounded great. Sound was excellent through SPDIF as well. Both audio and video are first rate. No lipsync problems or any other problems as I did not have problems with any Blue Ray, DVD or CD that I tried. Used the USB input to view photos in a slide show using a flash drive and it worked without a hitch. Firmware up date via internet completed without any problems and was much faster than the Elite BDP-95FD. Well done OPPO. I vote yes to release.

I could echo comments of others here, there are still some bugs in the system software, a few annoyances and particular problems related to DVD audio. However overall the picture is the clearest I have seen, Blu ray compatibility and start times are excellent. Framing is good after adjusting the menus of the player and projector (I'm using a Panasonic AE3000) Overall I am very happy with the player, all of the difficulties I have encountered I expect to be worked out in future firmware’s, and expected several firmware updates before this is perfect. Another great Oppo device, and good to see a technnology company paying so much attention to feedback from users.

With the exception of DVD-A, every type of media that I've thrown at this unit has played flawlessly. The majority of movies have been from Netflix and were not in prime condition. The BDP-83 played through them without a problem. SACD and CD playback is outstanding. Compared to my Oppo 980 the soundstage is wider and deeper. The last firmware update made DVD-A playback better, but it's still not there yet. Overall, this is one very impressive player. From the packaging to the solid construction of the unit, there is no doubt that Oppo plans to deliver a player that is second to none.

At first I was abstaining from voting until a new firmware came out that fixed DVD-A, some SACD discs, and some syncing issues. Now that the firmware is out and performing great, I am voting YES. There are still some minor bugs with the Oppo 83 on certain discs, but those are random bugs that can be fixed in the next firmware that will probably come out near or right after initial release. I have no vibrating problems, nor have I noticed many syncing issues. Thanks for the great product! Keeps the firmware updates coming. This player is ready for use by the public.

I've had the BDP883 for several weeks now in my HT system. I'm a little reluctant to say too much about it as a BD player as I haven't had BD capabilities before, so don't have a familiar basis for comparison in that mode. I do have six other DVD players, including two different earlier Oppo models which had been my favorites of the bunch for DVDs. Thus I can compare with regards to upscaling DVD's and SACD. In all areas the BDP-83 simply blows away my other units--better video detail, better color, improved sonic resolution and a seeming absence of both Video and Audio noise for good DVD and SACD sources. The unit with bluray media just astounds me for both video and audio, which is particularly noticeable for concert performances such as the Legends and Beck disks. As a result,I find the audio DACs in this unit to do a fine job, even when measured against moderately priced free standing DAC's. I've heard of BD as being slow to load, but I sure don't find that with this unit. The BDP-83 is a clear step up in construction quality from my earlier Oppo units (which though coming across somewhat flimsy, have been totally reliable for me). It's a good looking unit that integrates well with a variety of other components. There may be some glitches left, but I haven't encountered them. Even if I did, my past experience with Oppo tells me that they will resolve the issue and issue firmware updates. The process of doing this is so simple, that I consider it a welcome feature of the unit. If somebody stole my BDP-83 tomorrow, I'd be at Oppo the same day begging them to let me have another.

WOW! In as little as four weeks this blu-ray player has become the main staple in my home theater setup. I have enjoyed the easy setup menu, the well laid out manual and the exceptional video/audio performance of this player. No product is ever 100% perfect, while I have not had any problems with this player I do not see any reason to hold this player from the market for others to enjoy!

The BDP 83 is a superb player. PQ and AQ are fantastic. SACDs sound better than ever. The player feels and looks substantial, unlike some 6 pound players out there. The OSD is very informative and well laid out. The setup menus are excellent. The zoom quality is fantastic. But I have experienced the AV synchronization issues and I'm aware of some of the other significant issues that could potentially affect me. Therefore, I must regrettably vote NO. Hopefully, the next firmware will fix these issues and I will very happily change my vote to yes. With the new firmware 4/21/09 and the improvements associated with it, I have now changed my vote to yes.

I've tested the BDP-83 with several Blu-ray discs, SD DVDs, and CD, DVD-A and SACD audio discs. All the movies had no issues whatsoever, and looked terrific on my display. All the navigation and BD-Live features worked as expected. The only issues involved navigation of SACD and DVD-A discs, which didn't quite work right as of the latest firmware. Given their track record, I am confident that Oppo will fix these last few bugs either before release, or shortly thereafter, so I'm voting yes, on the basis of my experience with this player.

2nd post: After loading the latest FW update today, the first two DVD-Audio issues listed in my earlier post below were resolved. Still voting no though...DVD-Audio is not yet ready. Fastforward and rewind functions are sketchy at best, and Beatles' "Love" doesn't play seamless track to track. I would even add that the DVD-Audio bass response is a little better on my Denon, though I don't know if that is necessarily a problem with the player. I still don't notice any difference using the A/V sync function during S-DVD 24p playback to correct lip sync problems. Everything else about the player is superb! 1st post: This will obviously be a great player after FW updates, but the DVD-Audio issues (such as my Yes-"Fragile" disc not playing and locking up the unit) kept me from voting yes. Regarding DVD-Audio: It would be very much appreciated if OPPO could work out a way for the player to automatically choose LPCM over Bitstream when reading DVD-Audio...or at least assign that function to the remote. It's frustrating to have to go into set-up to change it. Also, there are un-authorized pauses between tracks (experienced with Beatles'"Love") that need to be addressed. S-DVD's look great (the Zoom funtion is excellent for non-anamorphic widescreen, btw), but I had lip-sync issues with S-DVD's as many others did, and fiddling with the A/V sync adjustment didn't have any positive affect. Only turning off the S-DVD 24p conversion corrected the problem. Aside from that, PQ, SQ and loading times are outstanding! This is my first Blu-ray player and I'm very happy with the way the BDP-83 functions in that area (as well as SACD, CD, DVD) and am looking forward to the FW updates.

Amazingly fast, this is what BD should have been all along. Great SD-DVD performance, great performance through analog outs for those with older receivers/processors. An amazing value. The HDCD issues need fixing, but I am confident Oppo will address them.

I use the BDP-83 as a transport, with bitstream, set to 1080i via HDMI to a Denon 5308CI receiver, and via a HDMI-DVI cable to a Sony 40" 1080i display. I use the 5308 to decode all audio formats. The BD-83 plays all Blu-ray discs with no problems, and the PQ equals the PS3 on my older display. I compared DVD upconversion from the Oppo to my Denon 3910 sending 480i via component and audio over DenonLinkIII to the Realta processor in the 5308, and I was unable to find any difference on my older display- Both looked great! For BD audio, I prefered the processing in the 5308 from the Oppo over the PS3, it just sounds more deep and revealing. I also found that I prefered the Denon 3910 for CD, SACD, and DVD-A over the Oppo, but not by a large margin.

I am very impressed with both the BDP-83 and Oppo's Customer Service team for their prompt attention to all reported issues. I think that this player is one major firmware revision short of ready, and that the company and the public would be better served by waiting for that firmware revision before proceeding to a general release. Well, that major firmware release occurred last night, and I was able to immediately confirm that two bugs I had noticed were gone, just as Oppo Customer Service had promised. The feedback from other EAP participants indicates that many of the open issues have been resolved. I suspect that another firmware release will be needed to address a few stragglers, but I am perfectly happy to pronounce the player Ready for Prime Time. YES!!

The player is built beautifully--more like a $1500+ piece of equipment than what it actually costs. The firmware upgrade process is easy compares to the procedures on my Panasonic players. The picture and audio quality of blu-ray discs is terrific, but more important for those who have big libraries of sdvds--the upscaling is better than any player I've tried. SACD encoded discs sound wonderful, although scanning is a bit coarse. On two channel cds, the sound is warm and natural through the dedicated output, good spatial imaging. Minor quibbles notwithstanding (scanning, an occasional glitch), if this player were generally available today, it would be on the top of the list.

This player is great. However, there are some serious lip sync issues on SD-DVD playback that need to be addressed before the player hits the market. Once that has been addressed and possibly some of the quirks in SACD playback, this will be good to go.

I tested 10 blu-ray discs (one rented) and about the same number of DVDs and CDs. The only problem I encountered was a brief stutter in the audio (bitstream, through coax) when resuming blu-ray discs or DVDs after having paused them. I reported this to Oppo, who fixed it in the latest firmware. Blu-ray discs look terrific; DVDs look at least as good as my DV-981HD; and I was again impressed with Oppo's stellar customer service. Since my only issue was resolved, I am completely satisfied with the player, and see no reason based on my experience that it shouldn't be released.

The Oppo BDP-83 has functioned perfectly from the moment I plugged it in. There have been zero issues and it delivers the best Blue-ray picture I have ever seen. It decodes all the new loss less audio formats without any problems. With regular DVD's it is equal if not better than my Oppo DV-983H. It has played all Netflix Blue-ray rentals flawlessly and passed all set up evaluation and calibration discs 100%. Thank you Oppo for another superior product!

I am 1 of the original 50 chosen for the EAP. After installing the latest firmware (VERY FAST. I think it took less than 2 minutes) I've come across nothing material to delay the release to the GENERAL PUBLIC. As stated in the 1st vote "This unit is more than stable enough." "I’ve bought FINAL production players from several other manufacturers and none of them was as stable as the Oppo BDP-83 is in its current state."

I have had very few issues with this player. Recently experienced an intermittant video distortion issue with my Radiance XD, but the most recent firmware upgrade (April 6th) appears to have solved the problem - although it was very intermittant so may surface again, I suppose. I am running this player as 'source direct' and have other options for DVD-A, so have not tested these related capabilities. This is a terrific player that is ready for the GP.

As of right now, I have had minimal issues with the BDP-83. I haven't experienced any lip-synch issues with SD-DVD with the (rather notable) exception of the Moulin Rouge special edition DVD. The firmware update of 4/6/09 addressed this to a small degree, although the issue is still noticeable. I have played many other SD-DVDs on the player and not noticed any issues. EDIT: 4/23/09 The firmware update of 4/21/09 seems to have resolved all A/V sync issues I was having. I cannot comment on DVD-A since I do not own any of these discs, but the player's performance with all other formats has been exemplary in my experience.

The BDP-83 has worked extremely well in my theater since I received it (I was part of the original 50). The 83 replaces an OPPO 980/DVDO VP30 combo and exceeds the performance of that setup in my system. Bluray and SD DVD performance is stellar. The 83 also works very well as a SACD and DVD Audio player. I would not hesitate to recommend the BDP-83 to anyone looking for a Bluray player.

I am one of the original 50 EAP testers. Updating the player with the firmware update which allowed DVD-A was an improvement. I tested 60 DVD-A's which resulted in 8 not being able to be played - they locked the player up. The April 6th update worked well and 7 of the 8 DVD-A's now play. Another problem has come up which is the DVD-A's which also contain an option to use DTS 5.1 are playing the DTS in stereo only and not 5.1. The regular DTS cd's I have(the cd only has DTS and no DVD-A option)all play in 5.1. The problem appears to be with the disks that have both DVD-A and DTS options. 4 disks that have this problem are Porcupine Tree(In Absentia), Porcupine Tree(Deadwing), Brazilian Jazz, and Blueman Group(The Complex). I did not test all of my DVD-A's which also contain DTS 5.1 though probably most of them have the same issue. The one remaining DVD-A which still will not play(locks the player up)is Seal II. Another issue with the DVD-A's is that I cannot use the back button on the remote to go back to a previous song, only forward. I do not have this problem with SACD's.

The BDP-83 continues to be an exceptional player. Add to that the multiple firmware upgrades to address nearly every issue the EAP and beta programs have identified, and I'm fully confident it's ready for release. As we've seen in the past, any minor remaining issues will be resolved with even more firmware updates. Thanks Oppo!

I just updated the firmware and tried my DVD-A discs. So far so good. The detail from Bluray discs seem to be better too after the firmware upgrade. It took less than a minute when updating the firmware from a USB drive. Load times are fast. The Bluray logo which was blue turned red on my Tv for a while but there were no performance problems. After I reset to factory defaults the logo turned blue again. I haven't tried the BDLive feature yet but it's not my priority. I'm sure the DVD-A playback will get even better as new problems are reported and fixed. I have only listed to three DVD-A discs this evening to see if playback is as easy as my there Oppo players. I wasn't disappointed. Great work guys and also thanks for the wonderful tech support who responds to email immediately when you have questions. Now will Oppo be supporting online streaming in the future? I think this player is ready for public release. APC Houston, Tx

The DTS-HD audio dropout was a show-stopper bug that should have been caught by the original beta program and addressed before the first EAP. While I realize this has been addressed with the latest firmware (which I've applied), the fact that such a killer bug slipped past the first time means my confidence in the testing process so far is not high. I'll need at least a few more weeks with the new firmware in place to feel confident about its quality.

I feel perfectly comfortable letting my wife and kids use this as an everyday player. They have been able to use it without problem, and for their needs 'It Just Works'. If the BDP-83 wasn't ready for prime-time, I would have left my previous player in the rack for the rest of the family to use. The 0417 update fixed a few of the minor bugs that I had previously seen. Considering how many firmware updates we've seen over the last 2 months, and how stable they have been (didn't introduce new fatal bugs), this player has already moved far beyond the other options in features that actually work.
