Questions about Order and Shipping

Q: Can I buy and pick up the player from your Mountain View office? If yes, how?
A: We are more than willing to accommodate local pickup of our products. To arrange a local pickup, please select "Pickup from Mountain View, CA" from the pull down box when selecting shipping method of your order from the OPPO on-line store. Once your order has been processed, an e-mail will be dispatched stating your order is ready for local pickup. Please arrange a time between 9:30AM and 5:30PM Mon-Fri to pickup the unit.

Q: Can you waive the shipping charge?
A: Sorry, the shipping cost is an inherited part of our cost structure, and we have to pass it on to the customers. Some other online store may offer free shipping because those stores ship millions of items and may have huge discount from the delivery companies, and they can absorb the minimal shipping cost. For us this is not currently possible. As we obtain more discount from delivery companies in the future, we will pass on the savings by reducing the shipping charge.

Q: Do you ship internationally?
A: Yes, we ship to international customers from a number of countries that we are certain to have reliable delivery and payment processing. Please add the item to the shopping cart and check if your country is among our shipping destinations.

Questions about Features and Specifications

Q: What is high definition up-conversion? How does it improve picture quality?

Up-Conversion   A: High definition up-conversion is the process of converting standard resolution video stored on DVD discs to high definition video signal suitable for display on HDTV (High Definition Television). It is also called up-converting. When properly done, up-conversion can produce outstanding video with picture that is very close or rivals real high definition contents. For more details about this technology and its benefit, please read our white paper on getting the most out of DVD on an HDTV display.

Q: What is DivX®?

About DivX   A: DivX is a popular media technology created by DivX, Inc. DivX media files contain highly compressed video with high visual quality that maintains a relatively small file size. DivX files can also include advanced media features like menus, subtitles, and alternate audio tracks. Many DivX media files are available for download online, and you can create your own using your personal content and easy-to-use tools from DivX.com.

Q: The DV-970HD features an HDMI output. What is HDMI?

HDMI

A: The OPPO DV-970HD DVD Player incorporates High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI™) technology.

HDMI was developed to meet the explosive demand for high-definition video and audio. With the release of HD content from broadcasters, studios and others, traditional ways to connect consumer electronics devices fall short of delivering the ultimate high-definition viewing and listening experience. To address this issue, leading consumer electronics manufacturers gathered to develop a next-generation digital interface that would meet the requirements for consumer electronics products today and in the future.

In short, the use of HDMI to connect all of your high-definition devices, displays and components will enable you to maximize your home theater system and experience digital content the way it was intended.

For more information about HDMI, please visit the official web site of HDMI.org.

Q: What are the main differences between the OPPO DV-970HD and OPDV971H DVD players?
A: While both the OPPO DV-970HD and OPDV971H are excellent DVD players with high definition up-conversion, the OPDV971H emphasizes more on the video performance and the DV-970HD emphasizes more on the overall performance and value. The main differences between the two models are:

  • The OPDV971H features video processing with "DCDi by Faroudja" technology and video chipset by Genesis/Faroudja; the DV-970HD uses a different chipset and technology for video de-interlacing and up-conversion. While both player produce excellent picture quality and the difference is subtle, the "DCDi by Faroudja" technology is able to handle some tricky video contents. On very large TV or projector screens, the difference could be noticed by experts or videophiles. When benchmarked with contents designed to test video performance, the OPDV971H will score higher than the DV-970HD.
  • The OPDV971H has a DVI output for digital video; the DV-970HD has an HDMI output for digital video and audio.
  • The DV-970HD supports Super Audio CD (SACD) in addition to DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Audio CD etc. supported by both players.
  • The DV-970HD has a flash memory card reader and USB interface while the OPDV971H does not.
  • The OPDV971H front panel has a brushed aluminum finish; the DV-970HD front panel has a reflective mirror finish.

Q: What types of digital video display does the OPPO DV-970HD support? What about DVI and HDCP?
A: The OPPO DV-970HD features a High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI), which is the latest digital audio and video connection for home theaters. Any newer TV, HDTV monitor or projector with an HDMI or DVI (Digital Video Interface) input port is generally compatible with the DV-970HD. For connecting to a TV with a DVI port, an optional HDMI-DVI adapter cable is needed. There will be no loss of picture quality using the HDMI-DVI adapter cable, however since DVI does not transfer digital audio, you will need to connect audio signals separately to the TV. The digital video/audio output via HDMI from the DVD player is copy-protected with HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). The TV or projector must be HDCP compliant in order to properly accept and play video/audio from the DVD player.

Q: What makes OPPO DV-970HD a universal DVD player?
A: The OPPO DV-970HD supports playback of virtually all current generation* disc types, including DVD-Video, DVD-Audio, Super Audio CD (SACD), Compact Disc (CD-DA), High Definition Compatible Digital (HDCD), Kodak Picture CD, etc. In terms of digital media file format, it supports MPEG2, MPEG4 (DivX and Xvid), Windows Media Audio (WMA) and other digital video, audio, and image formats. For media compatibility**, the DV-970HD plays CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD+R DL in addition to commercially pressed discs. For customers who travel to other parts of the world, the DV-970HD features a 110V-240V universal power supply, PAL and NTSC systems support with bi-directional conversion for both disc contents and TV output formats. All these features make OPPO DV-970HD a universal DVD player. A DV-970HD user said, "The DV-970HD plays everything you throw at it."

* Next generation disc types, such as HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are not supported.
** Compatibility with user-encoded contents or user-created discs is on a best effort basis with no guarantee due to the variation of media, software and techniques used.

Q: Does the DV-970HD support up-conversion over its component output?
A: The DV-970HD offers limited up-conversion over its component output. Currently, the DVD player manufacturer's license does not allow high-definition up-converted video output through the component video interface for CSS-encrypted contents. We must comply with this requirement. As a result, all CSS-encrypted contents (almost all commercially pressed DVDs) will be limited to 480i/480p (576i/576p for PAL) output over component. The DV-970HD only supports up-conversion over component output for non-encrypted contents, such as home video DVDs.

Q: What is the universal remote control code for the OPPO DV-970HD?
A: The OPPO DV-970HD uses a unique set of remote control commands, which may have not been included in the code library of your particular brand and model of universal remote. However, many customers have reported success in programming learning remotes from such popular brands as Harmony, Philips Pronto, and One for All. If you have a learning remote, please follow the manufacturer's instructions for learning individual commands.

For Philips Pronto users, we have made available the remote command codes and a PCF file. The remote command codes (HEX) requires manually setting the IR codes into your remote. The PCF contains a pre-designed DV-970HD device entry which can be copied to your remote using the ProntoEdit NG program.

Download TSU3000 PCF File

For other programmable remote control users who would like to enter the IR code into their remote control's programming software, a complete list of remote control IR code can be found here.

Download Remote Command Codes File (MS Excel .xls Format)

The 4A-0209 Beta Test Version firmware added an alternative set of remote control commands for non-programmable universal remote controls. For details, please check the firmware release note.

Q: Does the OPPO DV-970HD support discrete on/off remote codes so that I can use my universal remote control to turn on/off all my AV equipments at once?
A: Yes. The DV-970HD supports discrete on/off remote codes. The remote control IR protocol is NEC1. The device code 0x49B6. The discrete ON command code is 0x5A, and the discrete OFF command code is 0x5B.

For Philips Pronto users, the built-in HEX codes for discrete on/off are:

Discrete ON: 900A 006D 0000 0001 49B6 5AA5
Discrete OFF: 900A 006D 0000 0001 49B6 5BA4

For JP1 remote users, the discrete on/off codes are:

Discrete ON: NEC1, device #73, OBC 90
Discrete OFF: NEC1, device #73, OBC 91

A complete list of remote control IR code can be found in the "Support" section.

Q: What is the best output resolution to use with the OPPO DV-970HD?
A: The best output resolution of the OPPO DV-970HD depends on what type of TV or projector you use with it. The one that looks best to your eyes on your particular TV is the best resolution to use (Duh!). Technically it depends on several factors:

Typical consumer grade HDTV, HDTV monitors or projectors do not have high performance de-interlacing and scaling component. On the other hand, the de-interlacer and scaler in a high-performance up-converting DVD player like the DV-970HD is more specialized in de-interlacing and scaling DVD signals, leading to better picture quality. If not done properly, the process of converting a standard-definition DVD signal to the native resolution of your HD display may cause a host of video artifacts. These flaws will be especially noticeable on large and high-resolution screens. Quality de-interlacing and scaling are the key components to stable, artifact-free movie watching on HD displays. Based on these reasons, for most consumers the best output resolution is ideally, a 1:1 mapping to the native pixel count or scan rate supported by your video display device. For most ED Plasma, 480P gives the best quality. For HD Plasma or typical consumer LCD projector such as Sanyo Z2, Marantz and other Mustang HD2 DLP units, 1280 x 720 (720P) works best. Some rear projection or CRT HDTVs support native 1920 x 1080i, and for these units, select the 1080i output mode.

If your TV or projector has a high-quality internal de-interlacing and scaling circuitry, it is recommended to set the OPPO DV-970HD to output 480i over its HDMI port. This 480i output is the native video format as encoded on the DVD discs. The DV-970HD will transport the content from the disc in digital format to the TV or projector. The TV or projector will then perform de-interlacing and scaling. Similarly, if you use an external video signal processor (such as DVDO iScan VP30 by ABT, Anthem Statement D2, and other brands with HDMI input), the recommended output resolution of the OPPO DV-970HD is also 480i.

Q: Why should I buy the OPPO DV-970HD player when my HD display has an internal scaler?
A: That's because, in general, the scaler in a high-performance up-converting DVD player, such as the DV-970HD, is more specialized in de-interlacing and scaling DVD signals than a typical HD display's scaler, leading to better picture quality. The process of converting a standard-definition DVD signal to the native resolution of your HD display may cause a host of video artifacts if not performed properly. These flaws will be especially noticeable on large and high-resolution screens. Quality de-interlacing and scaling are the key components to stable, artifact-free movie watching, and frequently the components built into the display (and into many competing DVD players) to perform these tasks are not up to the challenge. In most cases the scaler built into the DV-970HD is more suitable for up-converting DVD video signal to high definition video signal, because:

  • The de-interlacing and scaling are performed at the point closest to the video source, thus avoiding video artifacts that can be introduced when analog video signal travels from the DVD player to the TV display. Once unconverted to HD signal, the video signal is carried to the TV in pure digital format via HDMI output, and is no longer susceptible to analog noise.
  • The de-interlacer and scaler have a direct digital hookup with the DVD reader, so that it can get the flags and additional information encoded in the DVD disc directly and performs the up-conversion accordingly. Doing up-converting outside of the DVD player may lose this advantage.

On the other hand, for HD displays that have high-quality internal de-interlacing and scaling circuitry, and for external video signal processors found in high-end home theater systems, the OPPO DV-970HD is an excellent universal transport. Its HDMI output supports 480i/576i resolution, which is the native video format as encoded on the DVD discs. By using the 480i/576i resolution output over HDMI, digital video and audio signals stay in the digital domain all the way from the disc to the display, without going through unnecessary digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversions.

Q: Does the OPPO DV-970HD support HD-DVD or Blu-Ray discs?
A: No. HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs are the next-generation video disc formats, which require special disc players. The current generation of OPPO DVD players do not support these formats. On the other hand, the OPPO DVD players are very good at producing up-converted high definition video from the standard DVD discs.

Q: Does the OPPO DV-970HD support HDCD?
A: Yes, the DV-970HD fully supports HDCD. When a HDCD track or HDCD disc is played, the on screen display (OSD) will show "HDCD" briefly. When a standard CD track is played, the OSD will show "CD" briefly. HDCD decoding is done by the DV-970HD if analog audio output is used. When digital audio output is in use, it is the responsibility of the AV receiver to decode the HDCD digital stream.

Q: Does the OPPO DV-970HD support gapless playback of SACD?
A: There are a small number of SACD discs on the market that are mastered to play continuously without pause between tracks. Starting with the "Batch: 4A-0111" firmware, the DV-970HD supports gapless playback of SACD. Earlier firmware could cause a silent gap of about 1 second between each SACD tracks. Gapless playback of audio CD is also fully supported with the DV-970HD product.
