Q: My 4:3 content is being stretched. Why is that and how to fix it?
A: The DV-970HD automatically stretches 4:3 content to fit a widescreen display if the TV Display in the General Setup menu is set to "16:9 Wide". For the best possible playback of 4:3 content, set the TV Display to "16:9 Wide/SQZ". More detail about the screen and display aspect ratio can be found in the User Manual.
Q: How do I access the 5th tab, the "Preference Page", in the Setup menu? I was only able to access the first 4 tabs for programming.
A: The 5th tab is only accessible when the OPPO OPDV971 player is fully stopped from playing. Stop the DVD playing by pressing the Stop key twice on the Remote. Then press the Setup key to access the 5th tab – the Preference Page
Q: How do I check the current output resolution?
A: Press the HDMI button on the remote control. The current output resolution will be displayed on the TV screen.
Q: How do I change the output resolution?
A: First, make sure playback is stopped and the OPPO logo screen is shown on the TV display. Then press the HDMI button on the remote control to show the current output resolution, and press it again to change to the next output resolution. You may repeat this procedure to cycle through all available output resolutions. The TV display may not support all resolutions. If you get a blank screen, please press the HDMI button again to try another output resolution.
Q: When I press the HDMI button to change the output resolution, I get a slashed circle icon indicating invalid operation on the screen. What should I do?
A: Please make sure that playback is stopped and the OPPO logo screen is shown on the TV display before changing the output resolution.
Q: Why are there thin black borders at the top and bottom of the display when I use 720p or 1080i output resolutions?
A: In order to properly up-convert the standard definition video from DVD discs to 720p or 1080i output resolutions, the video processor inside the DVD player must zoom the video image without causing pixelated image, loss of resolution or other artifacts. The optimal zoom ratio for the particular video processor in the OPPO DV-970HD leaves a small portion of the display at the top and bottom blank, thus causing the thin black borders. Many TV has built-in overscan so you may not notice these borders. However if your display device does not have overscan, the thin borders will become visible. This is a limitation of the video processor hardware, and the borders cannot be eliminated without sacrificing picture quality.
Q: Why are there black borders at the top and bottom of the display when play some DVD discs?
A: Some DVD discs are transferred from widescreen films. The aspect ratio of the DVD video are most likely 2.35:1 (as marked on the back cover of the DVD case sleeve). The standard TV screen is 4:3 (1.33:1) or 16:9 (1.78:1). When a 2.35:1 program is played on these TVs, there will be black borders at the top and bottom of the display. You may use the "ZOOM" button on the remote control to enlarge the video image and fill up the screen, but some image may be clipped from the left and right sides.
Q: Why does my screen display turned into "snow" after a few seconds of viewing?
A: If you are using the HDMI output of the OPPO DV-970HD and the TV screen turns into "snow" after a few seconds of viewing, it is because your TV or projector does not support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection). Unfortunately there is no workaround for this issue other than upgrading your TV or projector. For more information about HDCP, please visit the official HDCP Web site.
Q: What is Chroma Up-sampling Error (CUE) and is the OPPO DV-970HD affected by this CUE issue?
A: The OPPO DV-970HD does not have the CUE problem. Chroma Up-sampling Error is a problem that could happen when the reduced resolution Chroma data (color information) on the DVD discs are up-sampled to create full resolution color image. When it happens, edges, especially diagonal edges of saturated color will have a "staircase" or "mini-blind" effect. Q: Why is there no audio output from the coaxial or optical digital audio port when I play DVD-Audio or SACD discs?
A: The copyright protection feature of the DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD (SACD) disc format prohibits unprotected digital audio output. Since the coaxial or optical digital audio output has no copy-protection ability (i.e. pure audio stream without encryption and authentication), audio from DVD-Audio or SACD cannot be output via these interfaces. To enjoy high resolution digital audio from DVD-Audio or SACD discs, please use the 5.1-channel analogue audio output. If your A/V receiver supports HDMI 1.1 (or above) digital audio, you may also use the HDMI port, which has the required copyright protection mechanism (HDCP).
Q: My DV-970HD front panel seems to have scratches. Am I getting a used unit?
A: No. If you purchased a new unit of OPPO DV-970HD, we would never ship you a used or refurbished unit. In some production batches, the front panel comes with a protective film. The film may make the front panel look like scratched or used. You can easily peel off the protective film to reveal the brand-new shining surface. The follow picture is for your reference.

Q: How do I check the firmware version of my OPPO DVD player?
A: To check the firmware version, please eject the disc tray. While the TV display is showing the OPPO logo screen and the "OPEN" message, press the "OSD" button on the remote control. The current firmware version will be displayed.
Q: Are OPPO firmware releases accumulative of the fixes and added features to date?
A: Yes. As a result, you only need to install the latest firmware to get all the fixes and added features. We also keep some previous major firmware releases on this page for archiving.
Q: Why does my newly purchased DVD player unit come with a firmware version older than the one on your web site?
A: Because of the time it requires to manufacture, distribute, stock and retail the product, a new firmware release may become available while your unit is in the distribution process. In this case you may either contact OPPO or your OPPO authorized reseller to request a firmware upgrade, or perform the "Do It Yourself (D-I-Y)" upgrade using the firmware file downloaded from our web site.
Q: Does my DVD player need a firmware upgrade?
A: Firmware upgrades are totally optional. If you are happy with the performance of the OPPO player, you do not have to upgrade. OPPO strongly recommends that you base your purchase decision on the current specifications, features and functions, but not on any future or potentially available upgrades.
In general, OPPO recommends that you upgrade to a firmware if the release is called a "Major Release", since it incorporates important features and fixes.
Q: What implementation options do I have to upgrade to the new firmware?
A: We offer you two options:
1. Contact OPPO or the OPPO authorized reseller from which you purchased your unit for an authorized firmware upgrade. This process will require the DVD unit to be sent to OPPO or an authorized OPPO reseller for firmware upgrade. Due to the technical nature of the operation, we highly recommend that utilize this option. However, the customer will be responsible for shipping cost, and resellers may charge a nominal service fee.
2. Do it yourself (DIY). Although DIY firmware upgrade is an easy and usually trouble-free process, an improper or failed firmware upgrade could render the DVD player unusable. Choose DIY only if you are aware of and accept the risks of performing DVD player firmware upgrade. If you choose this option, OPPO, or your OPPO authorized reseller, are not liable for potential repair and shipping cost which may result from improper firmware upgrade. Make sure you follow all the firmware upgrade instructions carefully and perform the upgrade with a very reliable AC power source.
Q: I do not have access to burn CDs but I want to DIY. What should I do?
A: Contact service@oppodigital.com and we will mail you the firmware CD to upgrade.
Q: Why do I get "Unknown Disc" error message when upgrading the firmware?
A: Most likely the firmware upgrade CD was not burnt properly. The firmware CD image files available from the OPPO Web site are already pre-formatted as CD image files with .iso extensions. After you download the firmware files from the OPPO Web site, you'd need to burn them as the image files, not as data files, onto the CDs. The resulted CD should contain a .BIN file. A common mistake is to burn the firmware files as data files by re-authoring a new CD. The resulted CD would contain a .ISO file, which cannot be recognized by the player. For more information about the firmware upgrade process and how to correctly burn the firmware CD, please refer to the firmware upgrade instructions.
Q: I do not have the right software to burn the CD. How do I get free or trial CD-Burning software to burn the CD?
A: We recommend the easy to use BurnAtOnce software, available for downloading at www.burnatonce.net. You can use it to burn the firmware CD from the .iso file. After you install and start the BurnAtOnce software, do the following:
- Click on "File".
- Choose "Load New Image..."
- Choose the saved firmware image file from your computer.
- Load a blank CD-R disc and click the big "Write" button.
- Verify that the burned CD has a "935.bin" file.
